Job Title: Structural Engineer

Salary: Circa £50,000 - depending on skills and experience

What you'll be doing:

  • Performing simulation and analysis of structures and equipment subjected to dynamic loading
  • Providing structural design guidance at design reviews with respect to naval shock load cases
  • Following internal procedures and developing evidence of compliance through written calculations and reports
  • Undertaking peer review checking activities to approve methods and calculations
  • Leading and supporting the identification and rapid closure of issues emerging from all product lifecycle stages
  • Leading technical development and research activities, methods and acceptance criterion, liaising with industrial partners and external customers as necessary
  • Providing realistic programme status, identify problem areas and implement agreed recovery plans
  • Providing guidance and mentorship to junior engineers within the team

    Your skills and experiences:

    Essential

    • Mechanical Engineering Degree (or related STEM degree)
    • Understanding of the principles of structural mechanics and dynamics
    • Understanding of material strength properties (elastic and plastic properties)
    • Experienced in using Finite Element Analysis (FEA) software

      Desirable

      • Knowledge of MatLab, MathCad and Python
      • Abaqus FEA software knowledge or a willingness to learn

        The Dynamics team:

        The Dynamics Team are responsible for demonstrating a vessel's systems continued functionality after experiencing shock loading caused by Naval Underwater Explosion Events (UNDEX). As a Principal Engineer within the Dynamics department, you will undertake complex simulation and analysis of structures and mounting systems which support and protect vital equipment from high acceleration levels during naval shock events.

        We offer relocation support packages across all Submarines roles, subject to meeting eligibility criteria.
