Senior Technical Architect

Join Barclays as a Senior Technical Architect , where you’ll lead the evolution of our digital landscape, driving innovation and operational excellence. In this role, you will oversee the architectural strategy for ‘Skylight’, designing scalable, resilient, and maintainable systems, while delivering comprehensive documentation. You will align the technical architecture with business goals, ensuring solutions effectively support the organisation’s needs. Additionally, you will analyse current business processes, identify inefficiencies, and collaborate with stakeholders to set priorities. You’ll also manage a small team of developers, fostering a high-performing and innovative environment.

To be successful as a Senior Technical Architect, you will need the following:

  • Deep expertise in distributed systems and microservices architecture.
  • Proven experience in designing service boundaries and communication patterns.
  • Strong knowledge of event-driven architecture and API gateways (including REST APIs and GraphQL).
  • Demonstrated ability to create detailed functional designs and architectural documentation.
  • Proficiency in business process analysis and mapping.
  • Comprehensive knowledge of cloud infrastructure, including experience with cloud providers and internal cloud provisioning.
  • Strong understanding of containerization and database schema design.

Some other highly valued skills may include:

  • A background of application development and coding.
  • Experience with DevOps practices and CI/CD pipelines.
  • Familiarity with CLI and Infrastructure as Code (IaC) tools, such as Terraform.
  • Strong communication skills to bridge technical and business teams effectively.
  • Excellent problem-solving abilities, especially in navigating architectural transformations.
  • Leadership experience, with a track record of guiding development teams through complex transitions.

Purpose of the role

To design, develop and improve software, utilising various engineering methodologies, that provides business, platform, and technology capabilities for our customers and colleagues. 

Accountabilities

  • Development and delivery of high-quality software solutions by using industry aligned programming languages, frameworks, and tools. Ensuring that code is scalable, maintainable, and optimized for performance.
  • Cross-functional collaboration with product managers, designers, and other engineers to define software requirements, devise solution strategies, and ensure seamless integration and alignment with business objectives.
  • Collaboration with peers, participate in code reviews, and promote a culture of code quality and knowledge sharing.
  • Stay informed of industry technology trends and innovations and actively contribute to the organization’s technology communities to foster a culture of technical excellence and growth.
  • Adherence to secure coding practices to mitigate vulnerabilities, protect sensitive data, and ensure secure software solutions.
  • Implementation of effective unit testing practices to ensure proper code design, readability, and reliability.
