Job summary

As an Advanced Practitioner working in the Breast Services you will use a wide range of developed clinical and managerial skills to undertake mammographic imaging and breast ultrasound examinations

The post holder will work as a member of the multidisciplinary Team, undertaking mammographic images and performing breast ultrasound examinations.

The Breast Service is responsible for the Symptomatic Breast Service for the Bradford area and for the Pennine Screening Service.

The Pennine Screening Service is part of the National Breast Screening Service (NHSBSP) and is responsible for providing the screening service to 4 districts (Calderdale, Dewsbury, Huddersfield, Bradford and Airedale).

There are 4 mobile units, which provide screening in the 4 districts, and 1 static unit, which is The Pennine Suite, Bradford.

There are approximately 185,000 eligible women (between the age of 50-70) to invite for screening once every 3 years.

Assessment clinics are held at The Pennine Suite.

The Symptomatic service provides one-stop clinics and surveillance clinics.There are approximately 8,000 mammograms carried out each year in the Symptomatic service.

Main duties of the job

To undertake symptomatic and screening mammograms to the standard of the National Health Service Breast Screening Programme (NHSBSP) including highly skilled mammography procedures on women referred for further examinations in order to assist in accurate diagnosis.

To undertake breast ultrasound examinations on patients attending through the symptomatic breast clinic

Job responsibilities

The post holder will work as a member of the multidisciplinary Team, undertaking mammographic images and performing breast ultrasound

Knowledge and Expertise

To work as a member of a multidisciplinary team liaising with Surgeons, Radiologists, Sonographers and any other staff members as required.

To take an active part in multi-disciplinary meetings providing specialist knowledge to contribute to patient care

To observe all local rules and practices including relevant ionising radiation regulations and observe all departmental safety policies ensuring compliance with the Health & Safety at Work Act and COSHH regulations.

Apply knowledge, understanding and implications of IR (ME) R as justifier (and referrer where agreed)

To carry out Quality Assurance checks/safety checks on equipment in use and document the results. Where necessary act on variants reported to the Service Manager/Team Lead.

Have technical expertise in the use of all mammography, ultrasound and associated equipment and report faults as appropriate.

To provide a meticulous approach to patient documentation and the identification of images.

Demonstrate an understanding of legislative issues through practical application and monitoring of guidance etc.

Use advanced clinical judgement to enable independent decision-making.

To act as a source of knowledge providing technical and clinical advice; setting the highest clinical and professional standards.

To monitor the Radiographic standards within the service ensuring that staff have the opportunity to assess their own performance on a regular basis.

To maintain the quality management system to continually improve best practice.

To take responsibility for providing a clean and safe environment within your area of work.

To consistently carry out mammography at screening clinics maintaining appointment times.

To provide information and advice in a sensitive manner to those patients recalled for further procedures.

To actively refer screening women for clinical examinations following protocol.

To assist with interventional procedures and the correct handling of pathological specimens.

To follow procedures for setting up trolleys for interventional examinations and providing assistance throughout the examination.

To carry out mammography procedures using empathy, negotiating and motivating skills and to manoeuvre patients and equipment to ensure the highest standards of radiographic technique.

Consistent accuracy required in radiographic positioning to maintain National standards of 97% accuracy. This should be monitored through personal performance with respect to mammographic techniques and other imaging as appropriate to you.

To perform any other duties appropriate to the post, that may be allocated by the team lead

Liaison with Medical Physics and Engineers.

Leadership

To propose and evaluate new initiatives, clinical or practical improvements or new ways of working.

To be responsible for delivery of the unit objectives related to your area of skill.

Responsible for the management of satellite clinics including decision making regarding consistency of equipment for safe use, supervising Assistant Practitioners and others.

Responsibility for performance management of other staff by evaluation of the quality of their clinical practice

Direct flow of assessment clinics; from booking to providing leadership and support for the smooth flow of the clinic.

Knowledge

Essential

Qualifications

  • DCR Radiography/BSc Radiographer
  • Post Graduate Award in Mammography
  • Masters level certification for specific mammography Advanced Practice or willing to work towards
