Deputy Head of Delivery

Job summary

This is a senior role within the CUH Delivery Team which supports the work of the Deputy Chief Executive of the Trust (DCEO). The DCEO is a newly-created role with an ambitious remit to address key strategic aims for the organisation. Chief among these are:

Improving patient care - focusing on quality of care, organisational productivity and better patient flow across all points of delivery

Supporting our staff - delivering on our promises for equality, diversity and inclusion

Strengthening the organisation - developing the culture of the Trust and reviewing our existing structures to deliver more effective care for our patients

Building for the future - positioning the Trust for future demands, evolutions in care and the future cancer and children's hospitals.

This is an ambitious 'to-do' list, charting a positive way forward for the Trust. As we move each of these major strategic programmes into their implementation phase there will be a requirement for significant resource to both develop strategies and hold ourselves to account for delivery.

Main duties of the job

This is an exciting opportunity to join the Delivery Team as it sets out on this new phase of work. You will work alongside senior leaders in the organisation on programmes of work which will make a fundamental difference to how the Trust delivers its services now and in the future. It is a highly visible role which will work intensively with teams across the organisation to realise the aims of the Trust's strategy. The role would be particularly suitable for individuals with a background of working in a professional services firm and/or with experience of consultancy or internal audit.

The Deputy Head of Delivery will have a pivotal role in building and maintaining relationships across a wide range of stakeholders both within the Trust and with external partners up to CEO level. They may be asked to represent senior members in external meetings, including with the Trust's regulators.

You will therefore be adaptable to the changing pressures of the Trust and be comfortable to flex your approach across different audiences.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Masters or equivalent experience/qualification in business, operations management, planning, health management or related field
  • Project management qualification (e.g. Prince 2, Managing Successful Projects) or equivalent experience/qualification

Experience

Essential
  • Extensive NHS experience obtained at a senior level
  • Analysis of project proposals and business case development; understanding of the necessary stages of implementation of innovative projects in a health and social care environment
  • Proven experience of working with external partners at all levels
  • Experience of coordinating multiple complex projects with co-dependencies where demonstrable benefits were delivered
Desirable
  • Strong experience in a professional service firm and/or experience of delivering project-based work in the public or private sector (e.g. internal audit or consulting)

Knowledge

Essential
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge of organisational management in an acute hospital setting
  • Highly developed specialist knowledge in performance management, programme management
  • Highly developed knowledge of quality improvement in a health care setting
  • Working knowledge of health and social care roles, responsibilities, priorities and policy direction.

Skills

Essential
  • Highly developed communication skills with the ability to communicate highly complex information to a range of stakeholders to enable sound decision-making and provide assurance to external stakeholders on performance
  • Able to influence across teams, departments and organisations
  • Able to prepare clear, concise, grammatical, correctly referenced and version controlled reports and documents
  • Verbally confident and able to articulate the rationale for their position and listen attentively and genuinely to others
  • Able to work and communicate with clinicians and senior managers
  • Makes use of numerical data naturally, often and with ease
  • Leadership attributes and competencies with a high degree of self-awareness
  • Highly developed analytical, negotiating and influencing skills
  • Able to model complex data in order to support the critical appraisal of business cases including use of tools such as intermediate Excel and the NHS Comparator tool
  • Able to work under pressure and within difficult/tight timescales
  • Able to work in a matrix structure. Strong team player often working with people that are not directly aligned.
Desirable
  • Experience of preparing service specifications
