The Cambridge Genomics Laboratory at Addenbrooke's Hospital is pleased to be recruiting two Healthcare Scientists that will join the Haemato-Oncology team with with the task of developing a new diagnostic pathway focused on lymphoma patients.

This is a two-year contract to work on the NHS HaemOnc Genomic Network of Excellence project 'Streamlining the Pathways to Precision Medicine in Lymphoma'.

This exciting initiative provides the opportunity for the postholder to join a focused multidisciplinary team that includes clinicians, diagnostic pathologists, laboratory scientists and academic researchers to develop and implement novel pathways for patients with lymphoma to access cutting edge genomic technologies that currently sit at the interface of clinical practice and academic research.

As the lead laboratory of the East Genomic Laboratory Hub, the Cambridge Laboratory has a critical role in the delivery of genomic services to a growing population of over 8 million people.

Main duties of the job

  • This is a two-year contract to work on the NHS HaemOnc Genomic Network of Excellence project 'Streamlining the Pathways to Precision Medicine in Lymphoma'. This exciting initiative provides you with the opportunity to join a focused multidisciplinary team that includes clinicians, diagnostic pathologists, laboratory scientists and academic researchers to develop and implement novel pathways for patients with lymphoma to access cutting edge genomic technologies that currently sit at the interface of clinical practice and academic research.
  • Contribute to the development of a range of predominantly sequencing based tests to allow for optimising access and quality of genomics testing in lymphoma.
  • Contribute to database build and maintenance.
  • Contribute to optimisation of appropriate bioinformatics pipelines.
  • Somatic variant interpretation
  • Deliver and maintain a high-quality diagnostic service to regional haemato-oncology services
  • Closely collaborate with associated research and diagnostic groups on campus as well as regional and national level.
  • Facilitate translational research with teams included in the project.
  • Ensure the continuous improvement and development of laboratory services
  • Ensure the continued ISO:15189 compliance of the laboratory using the quality management system
  • Data and variant interpretation checking, and primary reporting of sequencing based reports on lymphoma cases
  • Liaise with research teams included in the project.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • First degree in an appropriate biological science or equivalent qualification
  • Master's Degree or externally assessed equivalent in Human Genomics, Molecular Pathology or similar
  • Membership of relevant professional organisation (e.g. ACGS, AHCS, BSGM)
Desirable
  • Registration as a Clinical Scientist with the Health Care Professions Council or final year STP Trainee

Experience

Essential
  • Significant scientific work experience in a genomics/molecular laboratory
  • Analysing genomic data and reporting genomics tests
  • Experience in applied bioinformatics (one of the posts)
Desirable
  • Acting as a duty scientist or team leader
  • Working within an ISO:15189 accredited laboratory

Knowledge

Essential
  • To have a thorough knowledge of human genetics and/or cancer genetics
  • To have a basic knowledge of typical laboratory operational procedures, quality management systems and problem solving techniques
  • To have knowledge of analytical methods and processes used for reporting genomic test results
Desirable
  • To have detailed knowledge of a specific disease area applicable to genomics
  • Knowledge of the processes involved in examining cancer samples in a clinical laboratory

Skills

Essential
  • Good attention to detail, and able to maintain intense concentration for a sustained period of time despite interruptions
  • Good verbal and written communication including the ability to use Microsoft packages
  • Excellent organisational skills
  • Critically appraise scientific information to aid service delivery
  • Able to organise and manage complex activities while providing leadership to a small team within the department
Desirable
  • Able to conduct Research and

  • Able to prepare and present scientific and clinical information at meetings or conferences
