The Home Enteral Feeding team are previous winners of the Trust sustainability award for work around reducing use of plastic items. They also hold extended scope for feeding tube related procedures.

There are excellent transport links to Newcastle (30 minutes via train from Darlington, 12 minutes via train from Durham) and York (30 minutes via train from Darlington) as well as having rail links to other UK cities and international travel from Newcastle and Teesside International Airport

Main duties of the job

The Home Enteral Feeding Dietitian provides dietetic care pre and post feeding tube insertion. The post holder will provide troubleshooting advice. All Dietitians within the team hold extended scope for tube related procedures. Care is provided to patients via a telephone service, home visiting, , ward visits, clinics and joint MDT appointments. The service is provided via an of FP10 model - this means the Dietitian is responsible for ordering tube feeds directly from the 3rd party company.

The Home Enteral Feeding team enjoy close working relationships with our 3rd party company who provide enteral feeding, the hospital based gastroenterology team and community nursing colleagues.

The post holder will be based at University Hospital North Durham but will be required to undertake home visits within the allocated geographical area. At present this is likely to include the North of County Durham.

Job description

Job responsibilities

The post holder will be responsible for a their own caseload referred to the Home Enteral Feeding service by various healthcare professionals. Patients will be seen in a variety of settings including hospital wards, outpatient clinics, telephone clinics and home visits. The post holder will work closely with other Dietitians and members of the Home Enteral feeding team and wider multidisciplinary team.

The department trains dietetic students (A, B and C placement) and the post holder will have an active role in student training planning, co-ordination and assessment

The Nutrition and Dietetic service is structured into teams; secondary care (incorporating nutrition support and critical care), bariatrics, primary care (incorporating care home training), adult & paediatric diabetes, adult Home Enteral Feeding, paediatrics (incorporating Home Enteral Feeding and paediatric weight management). the nutrition and dietetic service comprises of 6 teams, with 49 Dietitians, 1 Specialist Nurse, 4 Dietetic assistants and we are supported by central administration. We are based on 4 sites in the County, at Darlington Memorial Hospital, University Hospital North Durham, Bishop Auckland Hospital and Shotley Bridge Hospital.

Qualifications

Essential
  • BSc(hons) / BSc / Diploma/ Msc Dietetics Clinical supervisory skills
Desirable
  • Working towards or hold a Masters Degree. Leadership Training

Special Requirements

Essential
  • Good time management, ability to work as part of a team, flexible approach to work, able to meet the travel requirements of the post

Experience

Essential
  • Significant post registration experience
  • Previous experience of working in a variety of clinical settings Experience of working within MDT environments Experience of working within the field of Nutritional Support
Desirable
  • Previous experience of audit and research including submission / presentation to journals / conferences
  • Previous experience of working within MDT
  • Previous experience of extended scope work - tube related care
  • Previous experience of enteral tube feeding

Special Skills & Knowledge

Essential
  • IT skills
  • Completion of post-graduate specialist education e.g.PENG course or other.
  • Ability to plan, initiate and evaluate new services and manage change Has a highly developed understanding of the changing NHS environment and its impact on service provision and staff.
Desirable
  • Experience of using SystmOne and Cerner or other electronic patient record system

Statutory Registration

Essential
  • Current registration as Dietitian with Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC)
Desirable
  • Member of British Dietetic Association
  • Member of Parenteral and Enteral Nutrition Group
