Main duties of the job

The post holder will be responsible for extracting patient information from casualty case notes on a daily basis from all areas within the Emergency Department that have not yet been coded and inputting the data in order that the Emergency Department and the Clinical Coding Department meet their monthly deadlines. This will mean using the hospital Patient Administration System (Patient Centre) and other digital systems to extract and input information.

Job responsibilities

    • Ensure casualty cards and other pieces of clinical information relative to the coding process are available to be coded in a timely manner so deadlines can be met
    • Ensure that confidential information which does not need to be kept is disposed of using confidential waste service.
    • Record instances of poorly filed casualty cards and take remedial action
    • To be responsible for providing support to the Emergency Department team by being the central point of contact for all casualty card requests, both written and via telephone, prioritising requests thus ensuring they reach their requested destination in good time.
    • To liase with other wards/departments to ensure a good working relationship to enable the coding process to be effectively carried out
    • Produce and manage uncoded reports to support both A&E and coder workload prioritisation in order to meet deadlines
    • To assist the administration manager with the archiving of old casualty cards ensuring a safe working environment for the whole administrative team in the emergency department

Education and Training

Essential
  • Good standard of general education, including Mathematics and English

Knowledge and Skills

  • Good communication skills both verbal and written
  • Good interpersonal skills
  • Ability to act on own initiative seeking support where necessary
  • IT Literate
  • Good telephone manner

Experience

Essential
  • Previous clerical experience
Desirable
  • NHS clerical experience
