Senior Software Engineer

We're hiring for a Senior Software Engineer; you'll develop and maintain software products that make up citizen services and contribute towards their design.

Salary between £52,412 - £78,517 p.a. plus 27.9% employer pension contributions, hybrid hub / home working, flexible hours, and great work life balance.

Location

This role may be located in one of the following locations: Birmingham, Blackpool, Leeds, Manchester, Newcastle or Sheffield. We work a hybrid model - some time at home, some time in the office.

You and Your Role

You will support and develop our legacy services, which are responsible for paying £150bn to over 15m customers each year.

We want to build and maintain our core systems, contributing to DWPs goal of supporting some of the most vulnerable people in society by building demanding and exciting future digital services for the UK Government. You'll be flexible in supporting across applications, transforming business requirements into production ready code.

You will be responsible for the operational stability of the products you build, and be in a position to effect change in the on-going robustness and resilience of those products and carry out agreed infrastructure maintenance tasks.

You'll be leading a team of engineers in addition to collaborating and providing leadership to a multi-functional team supporting our applications.

Provide 3rd line support on products developed, including out of hours support as and when required.

Your Essential Skills:

  • Knowledge and experience of COBOL/MicroFocus COBOL, in a Windows and Linux environment.
  • Experience of coaching, mentoring, and developing colleagues. Experience in stakeholder management and influencing decisions.
  • Awareness/knowledge of Tuxedo, RHEL and scripting languages.
  • Awareness/knowledge of open source technologies and tools such as Python and SQL. Knowledge and experience of using SQL to query databases to extract specific information/data.
  • Awareness of test-driven development, business driven development.
  • Awareness of automated test suites and how they support a continuous deployment environment.

In return for your skills, we pay between £52,412 - £78,517 per annum.

You will also receive a brilliant civil service pension, with employer contributions of 27.9%-30.3% worth £19,494 - £23,555 each year.
