DWP. Digital with Purpose.

DWP is the UK's largest government department that helps people into work and makes payments worth over £195bn a year to support millions of daily users.

Our DWP Digital teams are using fresh ideas and ground-breaking technologies to create innovative, scalable, and user-centric digital solutions that are changing how government works.

You will join our community of Solution Architects in DWP Digital. We are looking for motivated Solutions Architects to take on the challenge of solving complex problems that impact the most vulnerable citizens in society.

You'll help us build better services for over 100,000 DWP colleagues and millions of users.

Designing World-Class Products

Your first role will be with our Technology Corporate Services team. We look after internal system used across DWP - they're typically not citizen facing services but they help our people deliver better services to users across the UK.

You'll be working closely with our product manager and business analyst to put together a viable solution to resolve problems - from the initial shaping of the solution and scope, through governance and into delivery.

You'll take on the challenge of making sure solutions are complaint, on time and to cost. You'll need to be mindful of the Strategic Reference Architecture - we have a focus on re-use and minimising technical debt.

We're a huge, complex organisation with lots of projects and programmes of work, so you'll need to think about wider use of the product too, not just the initial implementation.

Typically, in Tech Services we're implementing Software as a Service solutions, rather than creating from scratch, although development of integrations is also required to link systems together.

To get the job done here you need to be an un-blocker, removing hurdles to implementation.

You'll be "temporary subject matter expert", getting under the covers of the needs and the solution, for this engagement and all the ones you work on in future.

And we need someone who considers both the business architecture and technical architecture. We want something that works, and that works for the people that use it.

Your Essential Skills:

  • Architecture design, modelling techniques and patterns.
  • Micro-service and API-led architecture design.
  • Event-based architecture design and patterns.
  • Public cloud technologies and design patterns.
  • Presenting to technical governance forums.

Details. Wages. Perks.

In return for your skills, we pay £52,412 - £70,000 per annum.

You'll also get a brilliant civil service pension with employer contributions to 28.97% - that could be worth over £17,000 in your pension pot each year.

Plus, a generous leave package starting at 26 days, rising over time to 31 days.

You can also take up to 3 extra days off a month on flexi-time.

We also have a broad benefits package built around your work-life balance which includes:

  • An award-winning environment and culture: Employer of the Year 2023 (Women In IT Awards), Founders Award for Outstanding Digital Leadership 2023 (Digital 100)
  • Flexible working including flexible hours and family-friendly policies
  • Time off volunteering and charitable giving
  • Bring your authentic self to work with 'I Can Be Me in DWP'
  • Discounts and savings on shopping, fun days out and more
  • Interest-free loans to buy a bike or a season ticket, so it's even easier for you to get to work and start making a difference
  • Sports and social activities
  • Professional development, coaching, mentoring and career progression opportunities.
