Locum Consultant Vascular Surgeon (Endo Lead)
Job summary
The General and Vascular Surgery Directorate is looking to appointment a Locum Consultant in Vascular Surgery for 12 months required to support elective and emergency surgical services at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
The Imperial Vascular Unit offers all aspects of vascular treatment with specific expertise in complex aortic aneurysms and dissection, AVMs and deep venous reconstruction. There is very close collaboration with Interventional Radiology in all aspects of vascular treatment.
The clinical component of this post includes participation in the Consultant of the Week rota, arterial and AVM operating at St Mary's Hospital and outpatient activity at Hammersmith and Charing Cross Hospital. As the trust is a Major Trauma Centre, the post will provide cover for trauma patients that require surgical intervention, and appropriate training will be provided if necessary.
Main duties of the job
The General and Vascular Surgery Directorate is looking to appointment a Locum Consultant in Vascular Surgery for 12 months required to support elective and emergency surgical services at Imperial College Healthcare NHS Trust.
There are currently 9 substantive Consultant Vascular Surgeons at Imperial with interests in the field of complex aortic surgery, deep venous intervention and surgery, trauma and arteriovenous malformations. Two are academic posts and two posts combined with the trauma service. The department has a busy postgraduate programme with 10 SpRs including 3 research fellows and 1 overseas fellow.

Job description
Job responsibilities
A job plan will be agreed between the appointee and clinical Lead, this is not designed to be exhaustive.
Programmed Activities (PAs)
The clinical activities listed will include direct clinical activity, clinically related activity, predictable and unpredictable emergency work.
Supporting Professional Activities total 1PA per week including audit, clinical governance, CPD, teaching, research, educational supervision of junior staff and CPD.
DCC commitments: 2.5 clinics per week, 1.5 LAVVU lists per week & 1 GA list
Regular meetings: These include a weekly consultant meeting and combined mortality and morbidity and MDT meeting. The post holder will be expected to attend and contribute to a rolling programme of departmental audit meetings. There will be ad hoc meetings arrange in circumstances that mandate team agreement.
On call: On-call commitments currently stand at 1:5 weekdays, 1:8 Weekends, but this is under review and may be subject to change and for this the postholder will receive a 5% supplement. The PAs for clinical activity includes 0.5PA per week for predicted weekend working as the on call consultant is expected to undertake a ward round of all inpatients on the site they cover
Administrative/secretarial support: The Post holder will be supported by a named vascular secretary. The facilities for dictation are through the iDictate sytem and outsourced.
Office Facilities
The post holder will have office facilities and computer access at the St Marys site, as appropriate. The Trust provides comprehensive Internet access and IT support.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- On GMC's register with a Licence to Practice or eligible to apply for GMC registration and a Licence to Practice
- On GMC's Specialist Register or within 6 months of being admitted to the register by the date of the interviews or eligible for specialist registration
- Appropriate Royal College Membership
Knowledge/Skills
- Post CCT in Vascular Surgery or equivalent recognised and appropriate certification
- Competent in endovascular and endovenous techniques in the lower limb
- IT Skills and computer literacy
leadership/ Management Skill
- Able to take responsibility, show leadership, make decisions, exert appropriate authority
- Have proven skills in leading, motivating, developing and managing the performance of colleagues.
- Knowledge of finance/budgets
- Management of staff
Teaching & Training
- Experience of teaching and training undergraduates/postgraduates and junior medical staff
Audit
- Understanding of principles of clinical audit
Academic achievements
- Evidence of achievement appropriate to appointment at consultant level at ICHT
Language
- able to speak and write English to the appropriate standard necessary to fulfil the job requirements
