Apprentice BMS Designer - Letchworth (Degree)

We're on the hunt for enthusiastic individuals to join our Building Management Systems (BMS) Design team. By joining Johnson Controls, you’ll work with innovative technology and solutions to plan and effectively manage projects. Mentored by experienced designers, you'll gain real-world experience, with access to top training facilities.

Role

  • In this role you will be joining our BMS Pre-Sales team and play a vital role in driving profitable growth
  • Work closely with our internal and external partners and contribute to making Johnson Controls the go-to provider for BMS
  • You'll lead in developing solutions, designing, costing, and presenting technical value propositions in response to customer specifications and requirements
  • You will have the opportunity to gain a solid understanding of mainstream HVAC controls, Mechanical, Electrical, and Building Services Systems
  • You'll dive into exploring control & digital solutions and their applications to mechanical and electrical systems within buildings
  • You will acquire knowledge and experience in designing and creating Equipment Schedules, BMS Topology, BMS Network Schematics, and creating solution value propositions. You'll gain hands-on experience with control equipment and field equipment selection aligned with the BMS Design & Specs
  • You'll get familiar with networks and develop an understanding of building management system protocols
  • You’ll also get to understand HVAC & EMS (Energy Monitoring System), Power systems, Network design, drawings, and schematics
  • Our apprentices also gain business and commercial knowledge in BMS solutions
  • By working closely with the Sales team, you will learn how to quote for new jobs and communicate with clients effectively, thereby improving your communication and presentation skills

How you will do it:  

  • On-the-Job Work Experience: You'll spend significant time working with qualified BMS designers, where you will get the opportunity to put into practice skills learned at college in a real world setting
  • Collaboration with Qualified team members: Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll work closely with qualified Johnson Controls employees who will serve as mentors, guiding you in developing your design skills. This collaborative environment ensures that you receive the support and guidance needed to succeed in your role
  • You will be enrolled in a level 6 Building Services Design Engineer Degree. That you will study alongside your new role. You’ll enjoy the full support of your mentor and our dedicated apprentice training team
  • Opportunities for Growth: Throughout your apprenticeship, you'll have the opportunity to grow and apply the skills and knowledge gained in college in a real workplace setting. This experiential learning approach ensures that you develop both technical competencies and practical skills essential for success

Qualifications Required:

Either:

  • Min of 3 A Levels: B, B, C to include Mathematics. Excludes general studies
  • BTEC: Distinction, Distinction, Merit from 18 Unit BTEC to include mathematics
  • IB Diploma: 28 points to include Mathematics at higher level.
  • Applicants must also hold: 5 GSCEs at grade A*–C including English language and mathematics or specified equivalent.
  • A Full Driving Licence is essential

Training

  • You will be enrolled full-time in a Level 6 Building Services Design Degree Apprenticeship at Coventry University
  • This apprenticeship combines on-the-job work experience with college education, providing a well-rounded learning experience Continuous support from the training team and experienced design engineers ensures your development throughout the program
  • This qualification is delivered via block release in Coventry and therefore travel and overnight stay will be required
  • There is approximately 6 block weeks per year
  • Upon completion, a number of internal engineering opportunities within the company will be available to you
  • All of our apprentices immediately move into full time permanent positions
