Job summary

King's Radiation Physics Service provides radiation protection advice and medical physics support to King's College NHS Foundation Trust, as well as a number of other NHS trusts and other institutions. This post is for a key member of this team, a clinical technologist, who will be heavily involved in delivering many of the services we provide. This is a 2 year fixed post for a secondment cover. Applications are welcome for candidates with prior NHS experience and we would support those seeking Route 2 or equivalence

Job responsibilities

Main Duties and ResponsibilitiesClinical Scientific Responsibilities

  • Be able to perform periodic quality control testing on a range of radiographic and fluoroscopic equipment to the required standards and guidelines.
  • To carry out scientific and statistical analysis and interpretation on those test results in order to identify and diagnose faults and areas for improvement.
  • Make judgements and recommendations based on that analysis and appropriate consultation with senior staff.
  • Communicate verbally and in writing all relevant findings and make recommendations on courses of action to the clients.
  • Assist in implementing documents, practice and procedures that assist our clients in complying with legislation and best working practices.
  • Perform wipe testing of radioactive sources and calibration of radiation monitoring equipment.
  • Conduct environmental monitoring surveys to ensure radiation dose levels are below set constraints.
  • Conduct collections and accumulation of radioactive waste in accordance to protocols.
  • Perform dose calculations and assessment of radiation incidents as directed by senior staff.Systems and Data Management
  • Participate in the collection and processing of data for dose audits and the setting of diagnostic reference levels.
  • Conduct all work in accordance to the services quality system.Administrative Responsibilities
  • Maintain the records required for the correct management of radioactive substances.
  • Organise a schedule of quality control testing for designated equipment in collaboration with the department and their operational needs.
  • Be involved with the distribution and reporting of results for personal dosimetry.
  • Organise meetings, site visits and the provision of training as required.Leadership / Management
  • Prioritise own work in accordance with Departmental and Trust priorities and external demands. Meet expected results by using own initiative and following general principles and applicable regulations, standards and guidelines.

  • Keep abreast of the latest scientific and technical developments appropriate to the field.

  • Attend appropriate seminars, courses and scientific meetings and feedback developments to the service.
  • Supervise trainee clinical technologists.
  • Assist in the teaching and training of staff, students and others on aspects of radiation protection and medical physics.

  • Carry out all duties in accordance with the requirements of all relevant statutory regulations, approved codes of conduct, local policies, procedures and Local Rules documents.
  • Be aware and ensure implementation of the precautions required when working with ionising and non-ionising radiation. Be mindful of other people in the vicinity, who may not be aware of the hazard, and ensure their safety as well as your own.

Person Specification

Education and Qualifications

Essential
  • Relevant degree or equivalent level of knowledge.
Desirable
  • IPEM diploma or equivalent in Medical Physics.
  • Registered as a Clinical Technologist on the RCT register.
  • Up-to-date record of Continuing Professional Development.

Knowledge and Experience

Essential
  • Good working knowledge of a range of radiological and other medical imaging equipment. Familiarity with the recommended techniques employed to measure the performance and ensure the radiation safety of an x-ray imaging unit.
  • Competent in performing quality control testing of medical imaging equipment.
  • An understanding of the risks presented by ionising and non-ionising radiation and the measures commonly employed to reduce them.
Desirable
  • Able to perform wipe tests for sealed radioactive sources.
  • Able to calibrate radiation monitoring equipment.

Skills and Competencies

Essential
  • Able to prioritise and manage own work and exercise initiative when dealing with issues within area of expertise, but still recognise when additional help should be sought.
  • Able to accurately record data at speed into a computer during QC testing.
  • Good hand eye coordination and manual dexterity is required to operate some equipment.
Desirable
  • Ability to drive in the UK. (The quantity of test equipment required for some visits would make public transport unviable and limit your scope)
