PCN Pharmacy Technician

Job summary

Leeds Student Medical Practice and The Light Surgery Primary Care Network (LSMP & TLS PCN) are looking to recruit an enthusiastic and forward-thinking Pharmacy Technician.

The Pharmacy Technician will work closely with the PCN Pharmacy Team under the supervision of the Senior Clinical Pharmacist to ensure the safe, accurate and timely supply of prescribed medication to patients. They will provide technical and administrative support to the clinical pharmacists and clinicians. The Pharmacy Technician will contribute to the implementation of the Structured Medication Review and Medicines Optimisation DES specification. It is desirable for the successful candidate to have experience of service development and experience in working in Primary Care, however this is not essential.

Main duties of the job

The PCN comprises of two Practices; both are committed to creating a supportive working environment where the role will develop over time. The Pharmacy Technician will support the PCN and practice clinical team with queries around medication, acute prescription requests and medicines reconciliation following discharge from another care provider. The Pharmacy Technician will complete audits around patient safety in the prescribing of medication and present the information for sharing with the clinical team. To liaise with patients, clinical and non-clinical staff, and other health care professionals to improve the pharmaceutical care of patients.

The Pharmacy Technician will try to maximise support to all Clinical and non-clinical practice staff to improve patient care in relation to all aspects of medicines and their impact. To provide professional specialist medicines advice to GPs, Nurse Practitioners, Practice Nurses, Community Pharmacists, Community Nurses, and other health professionals to promote the safe, effective, and high quality, cost-effective use of medicines in all prescribing decisions for the benefit of the Practice's patients.

The successful candidate should be able to provide advice and guidance to practice staff and patients with regards to prescription and medication queries, policies, procedures, IIF, QOF, local incentive schemes, audits and medicines safety.

Our PCN does not have any care homes attached to our footprint.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • GPhC Registered Pharmacy Technician
  • BTEC/NVQ level 3 or equivalent in pharmacy services
Desirable
  • Accredited Checking Technician
  • Completion of relevant CPPE Primary Care Pathways

Skills

Essential
  • Excellent communication skills (written and oral)
  • Clear, polite telephone manner
  • Excellent IT skills including Microsoft Office packages and case management systems
  • Knowledge of the principles of medication optimisation
  • Good pharmacy knowledge including terminology
  • An appreciation of the nature of primary care prescribing, concepts of rational prescribing and strategies for improvement of prescribing
  • Knowledge and understanding of pharmacy law and ethics and current legislation
  • Understanding of current national policies, in particular those that impact on medicines management services
  • Effective time management (Planning & Organising)
  • High levels of analytical literacy skills
  • Organised with good time management
