With an award-winning, multi-disciplinary Programme Team and as one of the largest new hospital projects in the UK, the Trusts Programme Team combines clinical and design expertise, construction/project management excellence, and specialist roles. It works in a fast-paced and collaborative environment with responsibility for the planning, design, construction and delivery of the new hospital.

We are looking for a Technical Design Manager with expertise in Mechanical, Electrical and Public Health (MEPH) design. Working closely with the Deputy Programme Director, Technical Design Lead and other senior colleagues, the role will be responsible for leading MEPH technical-related design and construction workstream matters and the delivery of construction projects. Candidates will demonstrate excellent knowledge of the design process, MEPH design and regulations applicable to healthcare design.

The role should be considered an on-site role with the opportunity to take advantage from the Trusts flexible working policies. The role shall be required to work from any of the Trusts premises, although is expected to be predominantly based at the LGI site or nearby premises. The role shall involve travel as and where necessary.

Main duties of the job

This role will be integral in supporting the effective design, delivery and commissioning planning of MEPH elements of projects and ensuring that projects are designed and coordinated with the development of the wider project.

The role shall be responsible for providing dedicated mechanical/electrical focussed technical design advice and effectively supporting the planning, management, co-ordination and resolution of technical matters to support the delivery of projects.

The role shall be responsible for the implementation of robust, efficient and agile processes to support the management of design, review and acceptance of technical design information whilst ensuring that projects meeting key milestones and are delivered within budget.

The role holder will be required and empowered to establish and develop strong and effective working relationships at all levels, challenging and supporting design team colleagues to ensure high quality outcomes in the delivery of complex, multifaceted projects, through the application of structured mechanical/electrical-focussed technical design management processes and interventions.

This will be a dynamic role where you will be involved in several projects at any one time, providing the opportunity to manage large scale change and bring our vision for the new hospital to life.

Job responsibilities

The post holder, will be responsible for the planning, co-ordinating, and managing the development of the Mechanical and Electrical Design through the RIBA stages to completion. Supported by the BtLW Project team and PMO the post holder will ensure that design fulfils the aspirations of the Trust and accordingly incorporates leading edge technologies to achieve Net Zero Carbon and provide world class healthcare facilities.

The post holder will have responsibility for the day to day management of the external Specialist Technical advisers and/or other staff as may be commensurate with the grade.

The post holder will be an experienced design professional, able to organise and direct multidisciplinary meetings to achieve project objectives. The role will involve engagement and communication with the multi-professional team, senior teams including Directors and Executives within the Trust and the post holder will have excellent written and verbal communication skills.

The role will work across boundaries within the Trust and externally.

Person Specification

Experience

Essential
  • Experience of leading and managing mechanical/electrical-related technical design within healthcare construction projects.
  • Detailed knowledge and experience of designing to HTM, HBN, CIBSE, BSRIA and other best-practice mechanical/electrical-related design standards in a healthcare environment.
  • Experience of managing workstreams, sub-projects and/or technical processes in construction projects.
Desirable
  • Project management experience in a construction-based environment.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Mechanical/Electrical and/or construction related degree or equivalent.
  • Postgraduate level qualification to Masters level or equivalent level of experience
Desirable
  • Mechanical/Electrical Design Management or Technical qualifications relevant to the role or equivalent experience.
  • Relevant professional body membership.
