We are seeking a dynamic, self-motivated and passionate person with experience of working in a progressive Business Intelligence environment.
Do you have experience leading the delivery of BI solutions for organisations with multiple stakeholders? Delivering quality assured evidence based insights to inform business decisions?
Can you provide technical support and data warehouse maintenance? Do you have experience producing self reporting dashboards in data visualisation environments such as Qlik or Tableau?
The role will develop informatics delivery, ensuring user requirements are met with accurate and well-presented outputs supporting the NIHR missions to improve the health and wealth of the nation through research.

Main duties of the job
Our business intelligence tasks can range in scale from small ad-hoc data requests to long-term, cross-team projects. As part of a small and friendly team your role will allow you to work with the full end-to-end business intelligence delivery process. From meeting stakeholders and understanding requirements, through data modelling and the ETL process, to data visualisation and generating insight - youll get to experience it all!
Main duties will include working with relational databases with MS SQL server and ETL tools such as SSIS. You will also perform analysis of data loads and implement data warehouse design theory and data modelling techniques. Producing reports and data visualisation in Qlik or Tableau using a variety of data sources. Our current data warehouse is on-premise, but there may be the opportunity in the future to move to a hybrid or cloud based approach. Therefore, any experience of Microsoft Azure or Amazon AWS may also be beneficial.
Through our data scientists, we are exploring and implementing artificial intelligence and machine learning solutions. An enthusiasm for the field of data science, and a desire to collaborate, and support these projects will also be beneficial.

Data Quality and Evaluation
- Provide reports to an agreed standard to meet the requirements of NIHR Academy Executive Board
- Monitor established reporting to ensure data quality and integrity is maintained
- Evaluate outputs, formulate and present ideas of future reporting developments
- Deal with non-routine enquiries providing advice as necessary
- Analyse and report on a range of options in order to contribute to decision making and action planning
- Provide support and input into how data quality and integrity can be maintained as part of business improvement plans
- Provide support in responding to information requests and parliamentary questions
- Implements business intelligence policies and proposes changes to user working practices and procedures e.g. when planning for new projects, changes in legislation, new reporting processes, new training programmes impacting across the organisation.
- Continuous improvement of data collection and modelling processes to ensure future fit for purpose
Communications and Engagement
- Provide and receive complex, sensitive information
- Communicate complicated, difficult to explain issues to non-technical staff
- Present comprehensive reports and analysis of data gathered to the NIHR Academy Executive Board and other stakeholders
- Build relationships with end users to ensure that the BI function provides the tools that they require
- Contribute to cross-NIHR meetings and groups, effectively communicating information relating to NIHR Academy
Technical
- Use appropriate BI tools to access and analyse data
- Provide server side infrastructure support to the BI Manager to ensure reporting and BI tools continue to be available at all times
- Plan and implement projects appropriate to the role
- Achieve agreed objectives, working within professional policies, acting as a specialist in own area
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Degree in a science, mathematics or computing discipline or equivalent experience as a reporting analyst
- Masters degree in a science, mathematics or computing discipline or equivalent
Experience
- Understand basic concepts of BI Architecture such as ETL, Data Warehousing and Data Modelling
- Experience developing reports using data visualisation tools such as QlikView, Qlik Sense, Tableau or Power BI
- Experience in processes related to data collection, modelling and processing data to maintain a trusted data source
- Experience of Microsoft Visual Studio (SSIS)
- Experience creating ad hoc SQL queries of T-SQL
- Experience of project management
