Job summary

The post shall be accountable to the Digital Pathology Deployment Programme Director and reports in to the Portfolio Delivery Manager. The post holder will provide matrix management for a set of complex deployments to professional standards and lead in the day-to-day management of the delivery and project management of the NPIC solution nationwide. The post holder may line manage a small team of specialists, including project managers within the team and provide guidance and support on a day to day basis.

Working with the Portfolio Delivery Managers and NPICs deployment and technical teams to take the lead delivering and contributing effectively to successful deployment of the NPIC solution.

Main duties of the job

To succeed in this role the successful candidate will need a track record of deploying digital or technical solutions and substantial experience in project management. This requires the post holder to:

Build successful networks and collaborations across a complex range of stakeholders, including industry, academia, NHS and patients.

Coordinate the production and management of robust project documentation to support effective deployment processes.

Create a single point of contact and communication for assigned deployments and the coordination and resolution in line with the agreed deployment project principles of any related risks, issues, and escalations.

Ensure that all deployment activities are carried out effectively, efficiently and in compliance with Trust Policies, Procedures, good practice guidance and in line with national service standards and policy direction.

Be responsible for the management of a substantial delivery budget. This will vary by deployment.

Support any service re-design, policy / procedure creation & technical implementation. The job holder will use experience and judgement to evaluate complex requirements and implement solutions that are consistent with the overall aims of the Programme.

About us

National Pathology Imaging Co-operative (NPIC) is Leeds Teaching Hospitals Trust's digital pathology service. NPICs prime objective is to improve pathology services and patient outcomes through the deployment of digital pathology systems in hospitals across the country. NPIC's ambitions are to build a national digital pathology platform capable of holding a digital pathology image for every cancer patient in the NHS and build a platform for the development of AI and clinical innovation.

To deliver a market-leading digital pathology platform and solutions, NPICs digital pathology service is underpinned by Information Technology and supported by central funding from NHS England, Innovate UK and the Office for Life Sciences in-excess of £100m. With a number of Trusts currently utilising its services, NPIC has a pipeline of over 30 NHS Trusts looking to adopt its digital platform.

Job responsibilities

The post holder is required to liaise, work collaboratively, support good practice / learning, and develop good working relationships with key stakeholders across a range of internal and external stakeholders at all levels in support of delivering the programme objectives. Key relationships include:

Managerial, technical, clinical and administrative user groups within the Trust

Staff working in other NHS or associated system or clinical service provider

IT system suppliers and NPIC Partners

Programme leads, project managers, technical leads and other NPIC team members as necessary

The post holder will utilise their in-depth knowledge and experience of delivering IM&T and/or clinical systems to manage a wide range of digital deployments ensuring that the deliverables are produced to the required quality, within a specified time frame, within budget and that the project organisation is consistent with the complexity of the project.

Monitor, control and support solution deployment; ensuring process, project plans, methodologies and procedures are in place and followed.

Because of the nature of their work, the post holder must be able to plan and organise a number of complex activities or programmes, which require the formulation and adjustment of plans.

Prepare realistic and achievable plans to implement new systems, support policy and service development implementation and transformational change, and continually monitor progress.

To use specialist knowledge to ensure that deployments are carried out effectively, efficiently and in compliance with Trust Policies, Procedures, good practice guidance and in line with national service standards and policy direction and in accordance with digital delivery and project management best practice. This includes specialist techniques to analyse and document current working practices.

To develop, maintain and monitor plans for projects, tailoring the plans in accordance with the complexity of the project. This includes the management of a substantial delivery budget during the course of the project. This will vary by project.

To manage complex projects that have an impact throughout an organisation. Proven ability to drive projects and initiatives from conception through implementation while improving processes and best practices.

Manage the performance of external suppliers and their delivery of the agreed contract.

Monitor substantial project/programme budgets and performance related IT delivery contracts

To develop appropriate communication plans and communicate at all levels within the organisation with both IM&T and non-IM&T staff at a high level of complexity on subjects within their area of responsibility. This includes liaison with the test and release, incident and clinical management teams.

To diagnose complex deployment problems by analysing information and data in order to recommend a solution.

To document the lessons learned from the deployments and communicate these to a wide range of staff (internal and external) either by presentation or formal report. This includes the facilitation and contribution of post deployment reviews.

To use specialist techniques to contribute to appropriate changes in working practice, in order to delivery measurable benefits of the new digital solution.

To manage the performance of the assigned project managers and ensure their personal & professional development needs are addressed.

Other duties as commensurate with the grade and role as agreed with line manager.

Experience

Essential
  • In-depth knowledge of appropriate methodologies to support the management of deployment projects / programmes
  • Proven ability to plan and manage projects which deliver IM&T systems & support in complex clinical environments which required clinical & non-clinical staff to modify their way of working
  • evidence of highly developed specialist knowledge in all aspects of application implementation and change management. To have been attained in an Digital environment within a large organisation
  • Has significant experience of matrix management of project resources to successfully deliver substantial projects
  • Has successfully introduced new or updated IM&T systems to meet user requirements
  • Working knowledge of Microsoft desktop suite and project management software
  • A thorough understanding of all policies and procedures governing the Trusts approach and delivery of IT projects
