The National Pathology Imaging Co-operative is a £37m programme funded by the UK Industry Strategy Challenge Fund to accelerate the development of an AI industry in the UK around Digital Pathology

As Project Manager for the National Pathology Imaging Cooperative (NPIC)you will provide innovation support to the portfolio and delivery of NPIC projects.

With evidence of strong project planning and project management skills, you will be responsible for managing complex healthcare innovation projects with a focus on Artificial Intelligence, and coordinate activities with academics and stakeholders in Leeds and the UK.

Knowledge and experience of the healthcare and/or academic research and research funder environment is essential and experience and of AI related projects and a strong understanding of AI is particularly desirable. You will also have experience in assisting with large scale funding bids or a detailed knowledge of how to put together successful bids. The post holder will be responsible for managing the development of collaborative projects in partnership with Industry and Academia, following them through to transaction so that each project achieves its outputs.

A key aspect of this role will be to support companies to access expertise within the NHS to support product development programmes (both in terms of understanding unmet needs and carrying out clinical evaluation) and also to support the adoption of high-impact innovations in digital pathology.

The post holder will also provide an account management function for Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust with national and regional companies for research and innovation purposes, and rapidly develop a network both externally and internally in the Trust and within local Universities e.g. University of Leeds.

The post holder will work within the NPIC Research and Innovation team, leading engagement between key stakeholders including pathologists, researchers, The University of Leeds and Life Sciences businesses. Activities to proactively develop, convert and support the delivery of a pipeline of opportunities will include networking extensively across the UK, Yorkshire & Humber and Leeds City Regions, as well as attending events and visiting businesses to raise awareness of expertise and capabilities within Leeds Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust and the University of Leeds.

This role will work closely with colleagues from the NIHR infrastructure that is hosted within LTHT. This includes the Leeds Clinical Research Facility, the Leeds Biomedical Research Centre, the NIHR Leeds In Vitro Diagnostics Co-operative and the NIHR Surgical Medtech Co-operative.

The post holder will help to shape a range of innovation support services for businesses that can be offered through the NPIC programme through understanding the needs of businesses and how they align with capabilities and interests within digital pathology and AI. A key component of this will also involve development of a platform of education within digital pathology as well as Website development for the NPIC programme.

The post-holder will be expected to work closely with other business support projects in Leeds and other actors in the Innovation support landscape (e.g. Academic Health Science Network, NHS Digital) developing a strong working relationship so that businesses can seamlessly benefit from the wider support available.

As Innovation Manager, your main duties will include:

Managing the development of the NPIC programme domains, under the supervision of the NPIC Reseach and Ops Director and the Programme Board, and coordinating information on project portfolios.

Securing new external research income and supporting the development of funding applications to enable innovations to be developed and tested.

Proactively managing the development of high quality research proposals, providing hands-on support for applicants

Facilitating meetings and workshops to promote NPICs research themes.

Working in partnership with stakeholders, including academics and research groups, and seeking new partnerships, including potential industrial partners, to identify opportunities for collaborative research and commercialisation.

Liaising with partners across the NHS and internationally, to negotiate contractual matters and identify solutions to problems;

Acting as a deputy for the programmes Principal Investigators where appropriate.

Contributing to the compilation, drafting and submitting of progress reports to the Programme Board and other relevant parties

Supporting the development of training materials related to innovation for client staff and delivering these as part of a training programme or as required.

Traveling to conferences in the UK and Overseas with prior discussion and appropriate notice.

Person Specification

Experience

• Evidence of developing partnerships and collaborations across a range of stakeholders including industry, academia and healthcare
• The ability to rapidly assess client needs and identify potential solutions
• Evidence of strong project management skills including experience of successfully coordinating projects
• Experience of strategic planning and implementation for research uptake.
• The post holder will have an understanding of the NHS research infrastructure and the NHS agenda

• Knowledge and experience of the healthcare and/or academic research and research funder environment
• Evidence of recent success in securing financing for collaborative projects
• Knowledge of the NIHR and NHS innovation landscape;
• Experience with Artificial Intelligence development of management of AI related projects

Other Criteria

• Experience of managing a complex portfolio of projects to tight timescales
• A demonstrable ability to negotiate research contracts with UK and international partners
• Excellent writing skills with experience in assisting with large scale funding bids or a detailed knowledge of how to put together successful bids.

Qualifications

• Undergraduate degree in a biomedical or related discipline
• Masters or other postgraduate qualification and/or demonstrable significant relevant experience commensurate with this post.

• PRINCE2 or AGILE qualified
• PhD in biomedical / clinical / health research
• Qualification Relating to AI
