Main duties of the job
The post will include the management of general/core Urology but there is scope to accommodate a subspecialist interest.
Applicants should be on the GMC Specialist Register via CCT, CESR or European Community Rights. Proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview. The post holder should also hold FRCS (Urol) or equivalent

Job description
Job responsibilities
There will be a requirement to work between hospital sites and appropriate travel time where appropriate will be accounted for in the job plan.
There is no requirement to operate on paediatric patients in this role.There is an on call commitment, currently 1:15 (Category A).
The on-call Consultant is expected to be on call from 17.00 Thursday until 17.00 Thursday. On-call duties will include providing inpatient on-call care, advice provided remotely (e.g. by telephone), predictable and unpredictable on-call, post-take ward rounds, weekend ward rounds and travel to and from the hospital sites. Elective activity is cancelled for the duration of the on call period.
Secretarial support and office space will be provided.
Person Specification
Education and Qualifications
- Full GMC registration
- FRCS(Urol) or equivalent
- Entry on the GMC Specialist Register via:- -CCT or CESR (CP). Proposed CCT/CESR (CP) date must be within 6 months of interview -CESR
- Further higher degree MD or PhD
Experience and Knowledge
- Ability to manage a full range of urological emergencies
- Ability to take full independent responsibility for clinical care of patients
- Expertise in the diagnosis and treatment of a full range of Urological disorders
- Thorough and detailed knowledge of medical audit, medical education, current clinical and medical best practice
- Understanding of the clinical governance process
- Competent in basic IT skills
- Clinical and sub-speciality education and training
- Awareness of health service reforms and issues across the healthcare economy
- Current experience as an established Consultant Urological Surgeon
Management and Administrative
- Ability to lead, communicate liaise and negotiate with others
- Willingness to support the efficient and smooth running of the specialist service
- Ability to motivate, innovate and support stall of all disciplines
- Ability to supervise, appraise, coach and mentor trainees and other doctors
- Ability to organise and manage outpatient priorities, surgical waiting lists and operating lists
- Formal management qualification and/or relevant experience
Teaching and Training
- Commitment to continuing medical education
- Experience of supervising foundation year trainees or equivalent
- Ability to organise and participate in teaching and training of undergraduate and postgraduate students
- Experience in demonstrating clinical procedures and techniques to other healthcare professionals
- Formal qualification in medical training
Research, Audit and Clinical Governance
- Ability to undertake complete audit cycle
- Ability to undertake multidisciplinary audit
- Demonstrable experience in clinical research and ability to apply research outcomes to clinical and surgical problems
- Knowledge of clinical governance issues
- Interest and awareness of research methodology
- Relevant publications in peer reviewed journals
