Front End Developer. Fortran

Front End Developer.

Must be SC cleared and Hybrid working arrangement (Exeter) and Inside IR35

Front End Developer with experience in delivering a cloud-based solution to a problem based in the physical world. This work will support research, development and learning in data science (incl. machine learning), earth observation and digital twins.

The key aim of the Front End is to expose (show) insights extracted from combining geospatial environmental and non-environmental information in and around urban areas, in the form of interactive maps and graphs, in a robust and secure way.

Working in the project team, the Front End developer will explore the creation of and develop a Front End on a cloud-based system (most likely AWS), in a reproducible, scalable and reusable way. The Front End will take in data from various sources (eg the land-surface physical model JULES, climate datasets, ecosystem-service models) produced with Python code by the TWINE scientists, and be designed in such a way that the project team will be able to understand how it is built, and to contribute to its development. The ability to understand the Back End and guide its development for optimal integration with the Front End will be an advantage. A key part of the work will be to understand the scientific requirements, to document and test the Front End, and to adapt to continuous developments of the data to be exposed to users (more data, more geographical areas, etc.).

Responsibilities

  • Gather requirements for the Front End of the prototype digital twin being developed
  • Develop the Front End in a robust, secure and documented way
  • Work closely with the project team to incorporate the latest scientific developments into the Front End
  • Enable the project team to contribute eventually to the Front End development and take it forward after the term of this contractor post

Skills required

  • Ability to scope, design, build and deliver a scalable, affordable Front End solution in a cloud-based system (most likely AWS), thereby turning a scientific research question into a technical solution. This requires experience in working with geospatial information systems, physical models and gridded geospatial data.
  • Ability to work effectively within a scientific research environment (with its inherent uncertainty) and to create technical solutions that integrate well within a Python scientific codebase.
  • Ability to understand the technological constraints of the systems and to find flexible solutions to the challenges these present (including information security, data sharing, data characteristics such as big volume of data, gridded 4D information, particular spatial projections).
  • Evidence of good software engineering skills (eg importance of software engineering life cycle, code management, quality assurance).
  • Ability to deliver high-quality output successfully, both independently and as part of a team, meeting tight deadlines, planning and organising own work as required. Evidence of taking a technical leadership role in order to help others deliver.
  • Ability to communicate complex technical information clearly and effectively to non-experts and stakeholders,.
  • Ability to work in an effective and inclusive manner with others, to listen actively and understand diverse viewpoints. Ability to support others in developing theirs, leading to beneficial impacts.

Desirable skills

  • Experience in automating data ingestion and quality-assurance processes on a scale large enough to deal with meteorological data, especially for ingesting data from a variety of sources that the systems use.
  • Knowledge of lower-level languages (such as Fortran) as most of tmodels are written using this.
  • Experience in working with machine learning approaches, particularly in creating platforms that are optimised for the use of this new technology.
  • Past experience of working on governmental projects.
