Post CCT Clinical Research Fellow in EP Cardiology

Job summary

An exciting opportunity has risen for a cinical research fellow post in Cardiac Electrophysiology working towards an MD (Res) if the candidate has no prior research degree. The research projects will be within the research domain of VT ablation, AF novel technology and trials and non-invasive ECG imaging.

Candidates should be trainees within cardiac electrophysiology cardiology. Depending upon the successful candidate's level of cardiology training, access to the catheter lab and training in complex coronary EP & Devices.

This is a full time post fully funded for 12 months. The fellow will be fully supported by academic and clinical supervisors at all times, but will be encouraged to work independently.

The jobs will commence between August and October 2024 depending upon rotation start dates.

Main duties of the job

  • Keep accurate trial data and adhere to protocols for VT and AF ablation trials. Candidates are also encouraged to explore their own research ideas. Produce academic papers and abstracts. Present at international conferences

Providing and receiving information regarding current clinical trials, which contain highly complex, sensitive or contentious data and information.

Providing teaching and education of current trials and act as a resource to personnel and staff involved with clinical trials.

  • The enrolled employee should have a good experience in the field of Cardiology.
  • Provide dedicated clinical trials support to the health care teams.
  • Assist in the provision of background information related to potential clinical trials in order to obtain approvals from Research Governance and Local Ethics Committees.
  • Participate in the recruitment process and monitor the progress of the clinical trials' patients and report any adverse reactions or events.
  • Actively and competently participate in the consenting process when patients agree to enter a Clinical Trial according to the principles of Good Clinical Practice.
  • Liaising closely with Clinical Trials Centre as necessary to ensure smooth running of clinical trials for the patients. Ensure collection of accurate data and delivery to Clinical Trials Centres in a timely manner adhering at all times to the terms of the DPA 1998

Job responsibilities

It is a full time post, for a fixed 12 months, designed to provide research training and experience in Cardiology under guidance and supervision of Consultant Cardiologists. The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre provides tertiary cardiac and cardiothoracic care to the area of Essex covering a population of 1.7 million. The busy EP service covers a population of 2-2.5 million patients across Essex, Hertfordshire & Suffolk. In 2021/22, the number of EP/ablation procedures was 412. We are one of the largest device implanting services in the UK, in 2021/22 we implanted 569 pacemakers, 304 CRT-D/P and 167 ICDs. 38 device extractions are conducted per year between two operators.

There are 7 visiting device consultants.

The Essex Cardiothoracic Centre has an evolving academic electrophysiology cardiology research programme that involves both international multicentre studies and home-grown investigator-initiated projects. The department has a special interest in VT and AF ablation trials and studies. Depending upon the candidates level of cardiology training, access to the catheter lab and training in EP & Complex devices is possible.
