Component Development Statistician

Job summary

Component Development is an internationally recognised laboratory performing a wide range of research and development projects to improve the quality and safety of blood components for transfusion. The development and implementation of new blood components is one of NHSBTs strategic objectives. Currently these projects include developing universal components and a dried plasma component.

You will play a vital part in supporting these large translational programmes as the lead statistician within Component Development as well as supporting the wider Component Development team to deliver a wide range of other important development projects. The outcome of these projects is likely to be translated into routine practice across NHSBT.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be the subject matter expert and provide expertise/training and advice on all relevant statistical work to the CD team. Your responsibilities include:

  • Responsible for co-ordinating, planning and reporting results of statistical analyses of complex data on transfusion medicine to the CD team, SMTs, transformational projects and other interested parties within the clinical services directorate as well as outside the organisation as appropriate.
  • Being a core member of the transformational projects teams as the primary statistical point of contact, helping to guide and develop project strategy and plans based on statistical findings associated with all areas of blood components.
  • Evaluating and generating innovative ideas, supporting, and contributing to the development of strategy and improved service delivery.
  • Maintaining a thorough working knowledge of statistical practices used in association with blood component collection, manufacture, distribution, and use.
  • Managing statistical research projects as required in line with the business plan.
  • Providing expert advice on statistical data and methodology.
You will be required to travel and spend time away from base, which will involve working irregular hours and overnight stays when required, with prior notice.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • MSc in a statistical subject, or demonstrable experience in statistical equivalent to formal MSc qualification in statistics.
  • Member of Professional Body, e.g. Royal Statistical Society (which must be maintained in the role).
  • Demonstrates commitment to own continued professional development (CPD).

Experience

Essential
  • Substantial experience in the application of statistics.
  • Experience of supporting a team, including advising, mentorship and supervising individuals in their analyses/projects.
  • Developed scientific and technical knowledge and understanding of the blood component supply chain, and well informed regarding new developments.
  • Experience of leading on a statistical project or a programme of statistical work.
  • Use of univariate and multifactorial survival analysis and advanced modelling techniques.
  • Use of software for statistical analysis, such as SAS, Stata or R.
  • Managing workloads and resources to meet deadlines.
  • Experience of working with information technology using Microsoft Office packages (Outlook, Word, Excel, Teams and PowerPoint)
