Systems Developer

Job summary

NHS Blood and Transplant has an exciting opportunity for Systems Developer to join our in-house development team working in a friendly and progressive environment based in Birmingham. You will be responsible for the analysis, design, and maintenance of multiple applications critical to organ and tissue donation and transplantation, used by hospitals across the country, as well as helping to replace some legacy components with up-to-date solutions. You will also be working on server management both on-premises and Azure cloud and DevOps. Youll have good communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work independently and creatively when resolving problems. You must have a passion for innovation and a can-do attitude to creating new software systems.

Main duties of the job

In this role you will be required to:-

  • Design, develop and maintain our software systems and databases, covering all stages of the software development lifecycle.
  • Assist our staff in the preparation of requirements and technical specifications, and to produce and maintain documentation to accepted professional standards.
  • Perform research and development in the latest tools, technologies and platforms to support NHSBT.
  • Facilitate the integration of new solutions with existing systems.
  • Keep up-to-date with the latest industry trends and best practices to support the Team Leader.
  • You will be required, on occasion, to undertake travel to other sites and spend time away from base to meet the requirements of the post (with appropriate notice).

What we offer:

Band 6 salary of £37,338 - £44,962 per annum.

NHSBT promotes flexible working opportunities where the role will allow.

27 days annual leave (pro rata for part-time) plus Bank Holidays, increasing to 29 days after 5 years’ service and to 33 days after 10 years.

Person Specification

Qualifications

Essential
  • Degree in Computer Science or related discipline
  • Further formal training to postgraduate diploma level or demonstrable commercial experience is desirable
  • Demonstrable commitment to own continued professional development (CPD)

Experience

Essential
  • Experience of working with Agile tools and methods and knowledge of the full software development lifecycle
  • Experience with JavaScript; REST and SOAP based Web Services APIs; SQL databases; XML, XSD, JSON. MuleSoft, Java, ActiveMQ, RAML, Putty, Git, Maven, Jenkins, Nexus, Linux
  • Familiarity with testing frameworks such as NUnit and MSTest
  • Experience of Azure hosting, Azure DevOps, Git JIRA ad SharePoint would also be advantageous
  • Knowledge of IT legislation, including computer misuse, data protection, freedom of information
