Job summary
The job description below refers to the duties of the Assistant Practitioner and it is expected that the post holder will become fully competent in these responsibilities once trained. The post holder may undertake further training and development as appropriate to the requirements of the role. The post holder will be expected to perform all POCT tasks throughout the Trust both on and off site. Continuity on a day-to-day basis will be necessary for this role and as such, there may be (on an occasional basis) a need for 'out of hours' or weekend working to train evening or night staff. The post holder will oversee the operation of POCT devices in the clinical area, including staff training and competency assessment, hardware, and software troubleshooting, supporting POCT connectivity, contribution in writing relevant standard operating procedures (SOPs), ensuring quality assurance procedures are followed, carrying out audit, monitoring and recording stock checks and contribution to Trust POCT accreditation. The post holder will be an integral member of the POCT department though no specific scientific background is necessary. They will need to communicate effectively with other senior members of staff within the department, and other health care professionals throughout the hospital. There is a strong emphasis on being able to manage the workload effectively and have the ability to work independently taking the initiative as required.
Main duties of the job
Main Duties oTo co-operate fully with the POCT Manager to enable day to day POCT departmental objectives to be achieved. -Support the POCT Manager in ensuring that the department's quality objectives are achieved. oThe role will involve the development and delivery of training programmes to nurses, clinicians and other HCP in the use of POCT equipment to locally agreed regulatory standards. oTo receive, manage and prioritise enquiries, complaints and requests for advice verbally and through email, telephone and the bleep. Deal with enquiries in a sensitive and efficient manner. oThe role involves frequent interruptions and at times requires intense concentration to ensure tasks are carried out accurately and effectively. oMonitor and review the performance of the IT connected POCT devices remotely using POCT middleware to enable the efficient running of the service. oMaintain POCT devices in good working order, changing consumables where required. oMonitor and review the performance of the IT connected POCT devices remotely using POCT middleware to enable the efficient running of the service. oTo dress and act in a professional manner and encourage good staff relationships being the contact for POCT department out in the hospital or elsewhere. oTo be conscientious, disciplined, flexible and adaptable, having a sense of responsibility and be able to work accurately and precisely.

Develop a programme of work that will ensure all POC devices are managed effectively, and will be accountable for the independent management of this workload.
Develop strong working relationships with all clinical users and be seen as a source of expert advice in the commissioning and running of POC equipment.
In the absence of the POC manager the postholder will be responsible for advising the Divisional management on any issues with POC equipment which could result in withdrawing the equipment from use.
When appropriately trained the postholder will be accountable for carrying out required validation and verification of equipment prior to authorisation for clinical use.
Person Specification
Qualifications
- Must have a minimum of an NVQ 3 in a Science related subject
- Holds the appropriate Foundation Degree or willing to complete the IBMS Certificate of Achievement part 2, etc. in an agreed timeframe.
- Other Science based qualifications
- ECDL or equivalent
Skills and Abilities
- Effective verbal and written communication skills
- Good report writing and presentation skills and use of IT in a healthcare environment.
- Be able to work accurately and precisely
- Knowledge of point of care testing equipment and multidisciplinary testing
- Good understanding of clinical governance and its application
Experience
- Able to understand data from IT systems, some of which may be complex
- Ability to train and competency assess staff.
- Ability to perform audits
- Able to demonstrate competency in a range of laboratory procedures and equipment.
