Job summary

As a Band 6 Specialist Biomedical Scientist you will work as a member of the night worker team to a set pattern covering Haematology and Blood Transfusion at SMH.

An opportunity has arisen for a motivated and enthusiastic band 6 Health and Care Professions Council (HCPC) registered Specialist Biomedical Scientist to join our friendly and dedicated Haematology and Blood Transfusion night worker team, within Blood Sciences, at St Mary's Hospital.

The successful applicant is required to have relevant, specialist-level, discipline-specific knowledge and experience, and will participate in the laboratory rotation through the core sections of Automated Haematology, Coagulation and Blood Transfusion, and will receive additional training so as to provide out of hours urgent special haematology tests. Our busy department is fully computerised (Sunquest and Telepath). The Pathology department utilises the Q-Pulse Quality Management System.

Main duties of the job

The Departments of Haematology and Blood Transfusion offer the opportunity to work in a well-equipped, open plan, spacious and modern environment with a high level of automation. You will be working with new, state of the art analysers including the Abbott Alinity h series, Stago Star Max, Alifax ESR analysers, Sebia Capillary Electrophoresis, Spectrophotometry, HPLC technology and IH1000 Blood Grouping analysers. You will also have the opportunity to undertake blood film morphology examination across a wide range of both adult and paediatric cases from routine to complex. St Mary's Blood Sciences incudes the NWLP Special Haematology hub, which provides a wide range of both routine and high-level specialised haemoglobinopathy, enzymopathy and membranopathy tests.

The Blood Transfusion medicine laboratory supports the major trauma services delivered by St Mary's as one of the London Major Trauma Centres and additionally provides support for complex obstetric, vascular, haemoglobinopathy and bone marrow transplant patients. St Mary's haematology provides scientific and clinical support for complex and overseas morphology and haemoglobinopathy referral cases providing staff with the opportunity to develop in a wide range of interesting and specialised areas.

NWLP Induction

The NWLP induction will run on the first Monday of each month (provided it does not fall on a bank holiday) and includes laboratory training (for relevant laboratory roles). All new staff must attend the NWLP induction during their first week with NWLP.

Education

Essential
  • 2nd class honours degree or equivalent in a biological science which is acceptable by Institute of Biomedical Science (IBMS)/ Health Professions Council (HPC) for Registration.
  • HCPC Registration
  • Hold the IBMS Specialist Diploma or equivalent in relevant discipline

SKILLS/ABILITIES

Essential
  • Practical analytical skills associated with diagnostic laboratory work
  • Numerate Competence in PC word processing, spreadsheet and database software.
  • Ability to show flexibility by performing multiple tasks
  • Timely accurate working. Methodical

Experience

Essential
  • A good working knowledge of specialist subject in relevant discipline
  • Evidence of continuing professional development
  • Use of Pathology computer systems
Desirable
  • Previous experience in a large busy laboratory
