Apprentice Junior Data Scientist

Job summary

This is an exciting new post offering the opportunity to lend your analytical mindset and innovative inspiration to the data science function within our Information and Business Intelligence department, while working towards achieving a Level 6 Degree Apprenticeship.

We are looking for an individual who wants to be part of a team of forward-thinking healthcare Analysts, Data Scientists and Statisticians. You must have a commitment to completing a three-year degree apprenticeship and a real interest in exploring for data insights and finding solutions. You will aid the team in creating tools to guide improvements in clinical outcomes measures and insights. You will work with clinical colleagues on projects helping to generate prescriptive and predictive analysis to guide improved clinical outcomes.

Main duties of the job

You will complete your degree coursework and dissertation while working with real data and getting in situ real life experience of real-world data. On completion of your apprenticeship, you will have the opportunity to remain as a full time permanent member of the team.

The post is for a permanent band 5 position upon successful completion of an apprenticeship in the first 3 years.

You will undertake a BSc Data Science degree with BPP University (course brochure link below) which is fully funded by the trust. The programme duration is 3 years and is completed fully virtually. Modules include:

You will receive 20% off-the-job time allocated for study towards your BSc Data Science qualification. Independent study time, attendance to lectures and seminars, and completion of written assignments etc. are to be done during this time.

Person Specification

QUALIFICATIONS

Essential
  • GCSE level or equivalent, including English and Maths at grades A*-C/9-4
  • A-Level equivalent to 120 UCAS points including Mathematics/Computer Science or relevant subjects or equivalent NVQs or experience

PRACTICAL AND INTELLECTUAL SKILLS

Essential
  • Excellent organisation and time management skills
  • Be able to prioritise and work without supervision
  • Able to objectively analyse, evaluate and interpret information from a variety of sources
  • Clear communicator both verbal and written with excellent writing and presentation skills
  • Demonstrable understanding of basic data types and visualisations
  • Demonstrable understanding of summary statistics
Desirable
  • Understanding of data structures
  • Understanding of more complex statistical techniques

EXPERIENCE

Essential
  • Demonstrable experience to a minimum of intermediate level of using Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint
  • Working to tight deadlines and responding to changing priorities
Desirable
  • Experience using Python, R or another programming language.
  • Experience using PowerBI, Tableau or another visualisation software.
  • Experience of work within the NHS
