Database Administrator (Senior Technical Role)

Job summary

An opportunity has arisen for an experienced Database Administrator (DBA), to join the central Information Services team at Sheffield Teaching Hospitals NHS Trust.

The DBA will be responsible for the maintenance and efficiency of the data warehouse. Therefore, you will need to have

  • Practical experience utilising MS SQL Server 2018 upwards.
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.
  • Ability to manage and maintain SSAS, SQL scripts, stored procedures, database agent jobs, Windows scheduled tasks.
  • Strong knowledge of index management, integrity checks, configuration. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively.
  • Working knowledge of database shrink operations, DBCC commands.
  • Solid understanding of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).

Main duties of the job

The primary responsibilities include -

  • Monitoring the performance of the server and identifying bottle necks.
  • Identifying long running processes and inefficient queries
  • Identifying and creating missing indexes
  • Identifying and removing unused indexes
  • Identifying and removing unused data items
  • Building new tables

The Information Service's role is to -

Provide information to support the business planning, negotiation and monitoring of the legally binding contract for the Trust.

Provides a central resource/support for Clinical Staff/Operational Directors/Deputy Operational Directors/Service Managers/TEG.

Maintain and manage the cost per case database to ensure the recovery of income.

Ensures that the Trust complies with the data quality aspects of the Information Governance requirements.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Educated to Masters Degree level, or significant relevant practical experience as a Database Administrator utilising MS SQL Server
Desirable
  • Microsoft SQL Server certification

Experience

Essential
  • Strong experience in Database Administration from SQL Server 2018 upwards
  • Experience in communications and stakeholder management
  • Experience in troubleshooting and resolving database integrity issues, performance issues, blocking and deadlocking issues, connectivity issues, security issues etc.
  • Experience in Performance Tuning, and Query Optimization including strong knowledge of query plans.
  • Expert experience in implementing operational automation
  • Manage and maintain SSAS, SQL scripts, stored procedures, database agent jobs, Windows scheduled tasks.
  • Experience of working with third party suppliers.
Desirable
  • Experience in the Acute Sector
  • Previous experience in project management and planning

Knowledge

Essential
  • Strong knowledge of indexes, index management, integrity checks, configuration. How statistics work, how indexes are stored, how they can be created and managed effectively.
  • Working knowledge of database shrink operations, DBCC commands.
  • Solid understanding of SQL Server Reporting Services (SSRS).
Desirable
  • A good understanding of the health and social care environment and roles and responsibilities within it

SKills

Essential
  • Ability to work alongside IT services to detect and troubleshoot SQL Server related CPU, memory, I/O, disk space and other resource contention.
  • SQL Development - ability to write and troubleshoot SQL Code and design (Stored procs, functions, tables, views, triggers, indexes, constraints).
  • Ability to gather, analyse, interpret and report on information and knowledge, related to ideas and concepts in relation to database administration to influence key decisions.
  • Develop others' knowledge & practice in area of work
  • Ability to influence IT and lead others in the development of knowledge, ideas and work practice relating to database technologies.
  • Ability to establish and maintain peer review SQL scripts to identify performance issues and rectify or provide support and guidance.
  • Ability to configure ODBC links to other data sources.
