Web Applications Manager

Job summary

We are seeking a skilled Web Applications Manager to lead the development, deployment, and maintenance of our web applications within the Informatics Digital and Technology Directorate. In this role, you will ensure the successful delivery of projects aligned with the Trust's objectives. Your technical expertise in .NET, Azure, and front-end technologies will drive the development and optimisation of trust's applications.

You will be responsible for overseeing the entire project lifecycle, from planning and execution to quality assurance and maintenance. Collaboration with cross-functional teams and effective stakeholder management are crucial, as you will translate business needs into technical solutions.

Key responsibilities include managing Azure deployments, setting up CI/CD pipelines, ensuring security and scalability, and providing leadership and mentorship to your team. You will also be involved in strategic planning, resource management, and continuous improvement of our web applications.

Job responsibilities

  • Project Management:

    • Lead the planning, execution, and delivery of web application projects.
    • Coordinate with cross-functional teams including developers, designers, and information analysts to ensure project alignment with Trust goals.
    • Monitor project timelines, budgets, and resources to ensure successful project completion.
  • Technical Leadership:

    • Provide technical guidance and mentorship to the development team.
    • Oversee the design, development, and deployment of web applications using .NET and Azure technologies.
    • Ensure best practices in coding, testing, and deployment are followed.
  • Azure Deployment:

    • Manage and optimise the deployment of web applications on the Azure platform.
    • Ensure the scalability, security, and performance of applications hosted on Azure.
    • Implement and manage CI/CD pipelines for automated deployment and testing.
  • Maintenance and Support:

    • Oversee the ongoing maintenance and enhancement of existing web applications.
    • Troubleshoot and resolve technical issues as they arise.
    • Ensure regular updates and patches are applied to maintain security and functionality.
  • Stakeholder Management:

    • Liaise with clients and internal stakeholders to gather requirements and provide regular project updates.
    • Translate business needs into technical requirements and ensure these are effectively communicated to the development team.
  • Quality Assurance:

    • Implement and enforce quality assurance processes to ensure the highest standards of deliverables.
    • Conduct code reviews and ensure compliance with coding standards.
  • Team and Resource Management:

    • Manage the web applications team, including performance reviews, professional development, and mentoring.
    • Plan and manage the teams workload to achieve departmental objectives.
    • Deputise for the Informatics and Business Intelligence Lead when necessary.
  • Strategic Planning:

    • Contribute to the development and implementation of the Trusts digital strategy.
    • Engage with senior stakeholders to ensure that web applications align with strategic goals.

Person Specification

Knowledge

Essential
  • Highly specialised knowledge of .NET technologies, particularly C#, ASP.NET, and ASP.NET MVC
  • Strong experience with Microsoft Azure, including Azure App Services, Azure SQL, and Azure DevOps.
  • Solid understanding of front-end technologies (HTML, CSS, JavaScript) and modern frameworks.
Desirable
  • NHS data sets
  • NHS administrative systems: e.g., Cerner
  • Knowledge of security protocols in web applications, including authentication and authorisation mechanisms.

Qualifications

Essential
  • Master's level education in a numerate subject plus at least significant post-degree experience in web development or length of service and experience equivalent
Desirable
  • MBA or PhD in numerate subject.
  • Certifications such as Azure Developer Associate or Azure Solutions Architect.

Experience

Essential
  • Extensive experience in developing and managing web applications using .NET technologies, particularly C#, ASP.NET, and ASP.NET MVC
  • Proven track record of leading full lifecycle development projects, from requirements gathering and design to implementation, testing, and deployment.
  • Significant experience in deploying, managing, and optimising applications on the Microsoft Azure platform, including using Azure App Services, Azure SQL, and Azure DevOps.
  • Hands-on experience with setting up and maintaining CI/CD pipelines in Azure DevOps or similar tools
  • Experience in communicating complex issues to a wide audience
  • Experience in building and maintaining working relationships to a senior level
Desirable
  • Experience with NHS information systems
  • Experience in designing and managing APIs, particularly RESTful APIs, and familiarity with Azure API Management services.
  • Experience in modernising legacy systems and migrating applications to cloud platforms, particularly Azure.
  • Knowledge of OpenAI
