Seafarer Deck Rating Apprentice – Marine

An able seafarer works on deck aboard ships and vessels, acting as the watchkeepers of the crew. You’ll spend significant periods of time at sea, maintaining the safety and security of the vessel, cargo and personnel on board, and undertaking a range of practical seafarer skills covering rope work, anchoring and mooring activities and operations

We are currently recruiting for a Seafarer Deck Rating Apprentice to work with the Tarmac Marine fleet of marine aggregate dredgers.  Our marine team are specialists in marine and wharf operations, ship engineering and mineral resources.

Tarmac Marine operates in the English North Sea, English Channel, Bristol Channel and Irish Sea. Our fleet of four ships are purpose built for aggregate dredging and as part of a network of wharves and processing plants Tarmac Marine supplies high quality natural sand and gravel aggregates into major UK construction projects.

Main Responsibilities:
Tarmac are looking to further invest into Seafarer Deck Rating Apprentices. Through a combination of core college courses where the candidate will gain the Efficient Deckhand Qualification followed by sea time leading to the Able-Bodied Seafarer certificate of proficiency issued by the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.

  • An Able Seafarer works on ships as a watchkeeper and helping to maintain the fabric of the vessel.
  • During the seafarer deck rating apprenticeship, you’ll spend significant periods of time at sea, maintaining the safety and security of the vessel, cargo and personnel on board, and undertaking a range of practical seafarer skills including ropework, anchoring, mooring and other operations vital to the vessel.
  • You’ll work shifts over, so early mornings and late nights are possible, and you’ll likely work with other seafarers of different nationalities.
  • Integral to your role will be adhering to safety and environmentally responsible working practices and international regulations. You’ll also have a range of security duties to carry out during the course of your work

Training

  • You will receive training to prepare you for the Seafarer (Deck Rating) Level 2 Apprenticeship Standard End Point Assessment
  • This will include Block Release Training to North Kent College, Gravesend Campus at stages during your Apprenticeship Programme. This will invole staying at a hotel local to the college during week days.

    • MNTB Entry into Enclosed Spaces

    • MCA approved Steering Certificate

    • Proficiency in Survival Craft and Rescue Boats Certificate

    • Proficiency in Designated Security Duties
      Level: 2

       

    • MCA approved Navigational Watch Rating Certificate (including 2 months statutory sea time)
      Level: 2

       

    • MCA approved Efficient Deck Hand (EDH) Certificate (including 6 months statutory sea time)
      Level: 2

  • Upon successful completion of your apprenticeship, you'll move into an Able Seafarer Deck position.

Working Week
You’ll work a shift rota over 24 hours, so early mornings and late nights are possible. You will work 3 weeks on and 1 week off during the sea phase. Days and Shifts to be confirmed.
