Job summary
The Office Of Data and Analytics mission is to deliver insight through innovation in data and analytics services and its key function is to provide reporting and analytics to support patient care, quality, performance, financial flows and service development.
As a Lead Data Scientist, you will be expected to support technical and statistical tasks across a range of projects under the direction of the Head of Data and Analytics.
You will be expected to contribute to the delivery of innovative data products and services and storytelling, in response to business hypotheses.
On small projects you will be expected to lead this technical effort. You will provide data science and analytical expertise within The Office Of Data and Analytics.
As part of your work, you will be supported to develop new skills and innovate, through various means such as working on collaborative projects, hackathons, training and online learning, tailored to your needs.
Main duties of the job
This is a new role, within the newly formed Data Science team within the Office of Data And Analytics (ODA) at Mid Yorkshire Teaching Trust.
We're aware that a large percentage of Data Science projects don't make it into production and we want to buck this trend by working with colleagues in the ODA and beyond to see Machine Learning and Statistical tools put into practice for the good of the Hospital and our patients.
This role will be an important part of the building and continuous development of the Data Science service. We will build robust products to a high standard that can be trusted by our customers.
With support, you'll have room to innovative and grow this service. You'll work closely with Data Engineers and Data Analysts to see your products brought to life.
You'll have access to the Trust's new modern data platform in Microsoft Azure Synapse.

Key Responsibilities
- Contribute to the development of statistical, mathematical and predictive modelling to build the algorithms necessary to ask the right questions and find the right answers.
- Explore data looking from many angles to determine what the data means and recommend ways to apply to data to resolve pressing business and financial problems.
- Work in collaboration with subject matter experts, statisticians, User Researchers, developers and other staff.
- Undertake exploratory data analysis to inform the selection of appropriate machine learning algorithms for given problems.
- Contribute towards identifying and applying the appropriate data mining, data manipulation and data processing techniques, to prepare data and generate features to be utilized by machine learning algorithms.
- Contribute to the development of forecast modelling tools to assist with demand and capacity planning, project evaluation and impact analysis.
- Analyse multiple data strands from various systems to support pathway and population level insights to identify opportunities for improving patient care and outcomes.
- Contribute towards tuning and iterating a model to improve performance and explain the results and impact of a model to both technical and non-technical audiences across Mid Yorks services and the wider NHS.
- Liaise with internal and external customers/clients on requirements, working in an interactive fashion. Contribute to the development of data products in accordance with these requirements. Work with stakeholders to develop new metrics and reports to assist with measuring performance, quality, monitoring financial and access issues.
- Produce and present reports (that may be highly complex and/or contentious) and undertake relevant correspondence both within the organisation and to external customers/clients. This will include providing written advice and supporting information to effectively inform leaders and wider NHS organisations decision making.
- Communicate highly complex findings effectively both orally and visually to drive the right actions and outcomes from the analytics insight. Tell compelling, clear and actionable stories relevant for business goals using the most appropriate medium to visualise data.
- Analyse, interpret and resolve highly complex statistical or information problems where there is no precedent and where other leading opinions may conflict.
- Actively participates in projects to deliver development of new/revised products and processes, enabling organisational improvements and associated efficiencies. This includes ensuring data is used appropriately to inform effective decision making and robust and reliable outcomes will be delivered.
- Contribute to implementing frameworks and techniques for the delivery of risk management information to NHS organisations, taking into account the NHS environment, to develop appropriate statistical indicators for a risk-based assessment to be undertaken.
Person Specification
Experience
- Experience in the practical use of data science and analytical skills and techniques including statistics and data mining, programming and machine learning to a range of data types.
- Experience of working with large and highly complex datasets.
- Experienced in the use of statistical, programming and data visualisation software (e.g. R, Python)
- Experience of using version control platforms such as Github to collaborate and maintain a single codebase within a team.
- Experience cleaning and validating data for machine learning projects.
- Experienced in the analysis and interpretation of health or NHS related statistics.
- Experience within a Big Data environment.
- Experience of working with transaction data.
- Experience of working with unstructured data.
- Able to learn new technologies

Qualifications
- Masters level qualification in a numerate discipline, computer science or an equivalent subject requiring high levels of statistical analysis

- Significant experience working in an analytical/ statistical role

- Knowledge of data science and advanced analytics techniques, being able to critically appraise and interpret highly complex and large volumes of data.
- Resolves highly complex statistical /epidemiological / information problems where there is no precedent or where leading opinions may conflict.
- Ability to develop appropriate algorithms and rules using machine learning, statistical and analytical techniques for varying purposes across the business.
