Biomedical Scientist Microbiology

Job summary

State registered Biomedical Scientist in the Microbiology department. A mandatory weekend shift system (currently 1 weekend in 5) and Bank Holiday rota operates.

Enhanced pay and in lieu days are given for unsociable hours work in line with Agenda for Change. The applicant would be expected to participate in the single discipline on call system when appropriately trained.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder is responsible, on a rotational basis, for the day-to-day running of a bench area within the Microbiology department
  • To work as part of a section-based team to provide a high quality highly specialist diagnostic microbiology service for the benefit of patients, users and staff
  • To receive process and report on specimens sent to the laboratory in connection with infectious disease outbreaks in the community
  • To receive, process and report on specimens sent to the department in connection with infectious disease outbreaks as a result of bio terrorism

About us

In microbiology and virology, Biomedical Scientists are responsible for the diagnosis of infection and disease processes by the application of microbiological, virological, biological, serological and molecular technology, utilizing the most up-to- date scientific methods in conjunction with traditional methods of culture, microscopy and antigen/antibody-complex diagnostics.

Diagnostic work includes examination of cerebrospinal fluid, peritoneal dialysis fluid, urine, faeces, sputum, blood/serum, pus and other body fluids. Investigations include for example, antibiotic susceptibility testing, therapeutic drug monitoring, serological assays for HIV & Hepatitis B, identification of microorganisms and fungi, and films for intestinal parasites. Specimens for the screening of sexually transmitted infections including medico-legal cases are also investigated.

Qualifications and training

Essential
  • Current registration in Microbiology with the Health Professions Council (HPC)
  • BSc (Hons) in Biomedical Science
Desirable
  • Previous experience in a diagnostic microbiology laboratory
  • Evidence of a project performed in diagnostic microbiology

Knowledge and experience

Essential
  • Experience of a computerised Pathology System
  • Understanding of manual techniques and also automated technology
  • Knowledge of Health and Safety issues oAbility to work as a member of a team or as an individual
  • Ability to organise own workload
  • Ability to train less experienced and less qualified staff
  • Good communication and interpersonal skills to work effectively with both own co-workers and other, external health care professionals
  • Ability to work under pressure
Desirable
  • Experience of molecular technology

Specific Skills

Essential
  • Participation in mandatory weekend shift system and bank Holiday rota
  • Participation in voluntary single discipline on-call rota when suitably trained
Desirable
  • Evidence of experience in all major areas of diagnostic microbiology, evidenced by bench logs and training records
  • Knowledge and understanding of microbiology analysers
  • Good interpretative skills when assessing bacterial growth and confirming pathogens and antibiograms
  • Knowledge of latest guidelines for diagnostic microbiology practices
  • Previous experience on an on-call rota for microbiology
