Job summary

The Vaccine Development and Evaluation Centre department, based at UKHSA Porton, is the UK's largest capability for the handling of dangerous human pathogens and animal modelling of infectious diseases. The capability is used to understand pathogenesis and undertake pre-clinical development and assessment of new vaccines and therapeutics. The capability is also used to undertake studies in microbiological aerobiology, decontamination, and detection, and to develop diagnostic assays for clinical use. Studies are focused on high priority activities including SARS-CoV-2, Ebola, Zika, Crimean Congo Haemorrhagic Fever, Q Fever, Anthrax, Melioidosis, Clostridium difficile-Associated Disease, Tuberculosis, Monkeypox, Influenza, Pertussis, Meningococcal disease, Group B Streptococcal disease, Legionnaires Disease, Healthcare Acquired Infections, Anti-Microbial Resistance.

The Immunoassay Group is primarily involved with the development and validation of serological assays and their application in support of clinical trials and product characterisation and release. The primary activities of IAG are to support clinical trials sponsored by UKHSA and the National Immunisation Schedule Evaluation Consortium (NISEC). The Group also undertakes commercial projects on behalf of vaccine manufacturers. The Group has extensive experience in assay development and validation and operates to several Quality Systems including GCP, GLP and GMP.

Main duties of the job

Job descriptionThe purpose of this job is to perform routine duties related to and to provide general support in a team responsible for the delivery of the scientific and technical activities of the Immunoassay Group (IAG) and other groups within the GxP test facility when required. This post sits within the IAG Team.

The successful candidate would be educated in degree level in a relevant subject area or have equivalent experience. The role will require prior knowledge and practical familiarity with techniques used for serological assays, preferably ELISA. An understanding of the application of serological assays to support clinical trials and/or product characterisation would be an advantage. Experience of working within a GXP environment is highly desirable.

Job responsibilities

Key ResponsibilitiesThe post holder will be responsible for1. Utilising a range of standardized laboratory methods/assays/techniques in support of sample receipt, testing and reporting activities associated with the IAG projects to ensure projects targets are met.2. Taking responsibility for the provision of reagents and consumables required for area projects.3. Assisting the project team to ensure that the project operates to a high scientific standard using current methods.4. Laboratory housekeeping and assisting the supervisor in laboratory maintenance.5. Ensuring accurate data, documentation and laboratory records and correctly following SOPs.6. Supplying data to agreed timescales to enable the preparation of project reports, presentations, and publications.7. Performing any other duties required by the Line manager commensurate with grade.8. Ensuring that the project team undertakes work in accordance with the UKHSA Portons Code of Safety Practice and working within any Quality Systems that are applicable to the site.9. Maintaining health and safety competence to the national occupational standard Make sure your actions reduce risks to health and safety (NOS HSS1).10. Fulfilling the requirements of UKHSA Values and Behaviors commensurate with grade.11. Complying with all UKHSA policies and procedures.

Essential Criteria

  • Experience in relevant methods (e.g., immunoassays, cell-based assays, cell culture, microbiology, virology) acquired through previous employment, placements, or taught course
  • Experience or understanding of working in a laboratory environment
  • Experience or understanding of working within a regulated environment (e.g., ISO9001, GCP) and safe working practices

Desirable Criteria

  • Good knowledge and practical experience with specialist techniques for project i.e., working in a containment level 3 laboratory, working in a high throughput environment, immunoassays

Starting Salary

Entrants to the Civil Service are expected to start on the minimum of the pay band.

Either case is determined by whichever is the highest.
