Assistant General Manager (Haematology)

Job summary

We are looking for a dynamic, motivated and talented Assistant General Manager to join the Haematology service at UCLH.

The successful candidate will have strong operational management experience and will be expected to provide operational leadership for their department. Candidates should have experience of working closely with multidisciplinary teams, leading service developments, data management and staff management. We are looking for a leader who can demonstrate effective communication skills, team working, excellent problem solving abilities and strong values based in line with the UCLH Trust values.

UCLH is one of the largest and busiest haematology units in Europe with >100 dedicated inpatient beds in a purpose-built building which opened in 2022 (the Grafton Way Building).

The clinical team comprises of >40 haematology registrars-in-training/senior clinical fellows, >70 haematology consultants and a large team of clinical nurse specialists, advanced nurse practitioners and specialist ward nurses. The service provided covers the entire range of malignant, non-malignant and experimental haematology including phase 1 clinical trials, CAR T-cell therapy, bone marrow transplantation, TTP, haemoglobinopathies, bleeding and thrombotic disorders, leukaemia, lymphoma, myeloma, teenage and young adults, and state-of-the-art diagnostics.

Clinical services are supported by a team of over 40 administrative and management staff who help us to deliver work class care.

Main duties of the job

  • The post holder will be responsible for ensuring that services are efficiently and effectively run within the Cancer Division. This will be achieved through excellent human resource, financial and performance management, and leadership of change management to achieve improvement in process and patient outcomes.
  • The post holder will also take the lead on specific service development issues. The post holder will also be operationally responsible for designated areas of the Cancer Division including direct management responsibility for staff and direct budgetary control.
  • The post holder will be responsible for meeting both the Cancer Division's objectives and the strategic corporate objectives of the organisation and will provide leadership and management support to staff within their areas of management. The role will also focus on the development and implementation of projects working within tight time scales when required.

The Assistant General Manager will deputise, where appropriate for the General Manager in their absence.
