Business Intelligence Reports Lead - Cancer

Job summary

UCLH is seeking a full-time fixed terms Business Intelligence lead in Cancer to join the Business Intelligence Reports team.

The post holder will be responsible for producing expert analysis, based on robust methodologies, to monitor patterns of cancer care in the Trust. Through reporting information on key metrics on cancer activity, waiting times performance & outcomes back to our stakeholders, the post holder will support corporate cancer & operational teams to drive high quality cancer care for patient benefit. Close attention to detail & the ability to combine detailed operational awareness for cancer care & treatment with deep knowledge of data & systems will be required.Establishing efficient & effective cancer data & intelligence processes across the trust throughout the cancer journey is one of our core objectives. The post holder will have good knowledge of the Cancer Outcomes & Services Dataset, cancer waiting times & other relevant data & systems. They will also have experience in leading projects to establish & improve data processes & workflows.The post holder will work as part of a team but must also be confident & well equipped to work independently. Competing deadlines mean that we are often required to respond quickly, work flexibly & maintain performance throughout periods of ambiguity. Strong communication is essential.

Main duties of the job

  • Act as an expert lead & support the senior cancer manager in the development of standard cancer reports & understanding of key performance & process issues.
  • Responsible for enriching business intelligence & analysis the trust
  • Identification & improvement of current sources & data flows of cancer data across the Trust
  • To have an excellent understanding of cancer pathways in EPIC & EPIC workflows to ensure we maximise the quality of data in the PAS system to support operational processes & improved performance.
  • Identification of data gaps & supporting the development of new data flows & sources within Epic
  • Responsible for suggesting improvements in existing data transformation processes underpinning the server environment, business intelligence & analytical products.
  • To be a key source of cancer reporting expertise in the trust
  • The post holder will be expected to act with minimum guidelines, in relation to business intelligence & analysis.
  • To be a key source of Commissioning, NHS Data Dictionary, COSD & Cancer Waiting Times expertise for the trust in relation to data standards
  • Manage external reporting through robust & timely reporting within the remit of the role.
  • Deputising on all cancer informatics issues for the senior cancer manager.

Person Specification

Knowledge and Qualifications

Essential
  • Master's degree level or equivalent professional experience within a healthcare information environment
  • Understanding of acute activity recording and reporting, including cancer waiting lists, COSD, A&E, diagnostics, SUS etc
  • Understanding of data retrieval, data processing, information analysis and interpretation within acute hospitals

Experience

Essential
  • Substantial experience in senior Cancer information role in an NHS or equivalent
  • Substantial experience of working with relational databases, including complex SQL
  • Substantial experience of using SQL server
  • Substantial experience of using MS Excel
  • Proven track record of delivery at a senior level in a large complex service focused organisation, including change management, and performance management.
  • Experience of using Power BI for report development
Desirable
  • Experience of using Epic BI stack, including developing Radar, Slicer Dicer, Reporting Workbench contents

Skills and Abilities

Essential
  • Knowledge of information analysis and the use of information across the NHS acquired through degree or equivalent experience.
  • Ability to interrogate databases using SQL.
  • Ability to interpret complex data.
  • Ability to convert data to management information.
  • Advanced use of MS Excel
  • Advanced use of Power BI for report development
  • Ability to independently interpret the requirements of information users and present detailed, complex reports that can be understood by a wide audience.
