Job summary

The purpose of the Apprenticeship AP is to complete a 2-year University led training program supported by extensive workplace learning and practice, to qualify as an AP in Pre-treatment.

During training, the Apprentice AP will work as part of the Radiotherapy workforce in Pre-treatment, supporting HCPC radiographers to deliver high quality, person centred, and compassionate care to patients.

To qualify as an Assistant Practitioner in Pre-treatment activities.

The postholder will support the therapeutic radiographers in the preparation, localisation and CT scanning of patients due to undergo radiotherapy.

Base Location: Poole Hospital

Main duties of the job

  • To learn and undertake, under supervision, all required radiographic techniques outlined in the apprenticeship program to support the pre-treatment team.
  • To support in the clinical mark up of treatments and assist as required in day-to-day service.
  • Ensure the dignity and privacy of patients is always maintained.
  • Correctly identify patients from waiting room and escort to any clinical environment.
  • Assist in the manufacture of patient specific immobilisation devices.
  • Assist patients with dressing, undressing and toileting as necessary.
  • Ensure patients in wheelchairs or on trolleys that are waiting for planning, treatment or hospital transport are supported.
  • Interpret basic test results.
  • The post hold will be required to participate as a member of the Pre-treatment team in the localisation and scanning of patients for radiotherapy with the supervision of a therapeutic radiographer. In accordance with the department local rules and regulations as governed by IR(ME)R and IRR17.
  • Perform cannulations and load injector pumps.
  • Accurately record treatment set up information on the radiotherapy IT systems.
  • Accurately record patient's height and weight.
  • Assist with stock control.
  • Ensure the care of the patient is maintained including applying dressings.
  • To adhere to Health and Safety, COSHH, Fire, Infection Control and Manual Handling Regulations.
  • To ensure the safe handling of equipment.
  • To be flexible in respect to working arrangements.

Qualifications

Essential
  • C grade GCSE or equivalent in Maths and English
  • NVQ or equivalent at level 3
Desirable
  • An understanding of the NHS environment
  • An understanding of confidentiality and safeguarding

Experience
