Senior Network Infrastructure Engineer

Job summary

To provide specialist IT Network engineering services for the University Hospitals Plymouth NHS Trust (UHPNT) and D&I supported organisations. Act as deputy for the Network Manager. Provide expert guidance to Network Engineers, Network Manager, and stakeholders. Investigate a range of complex D&I issues. Follow the relevant technical strategies, policies, standards, and practices.

***Preference will be given to internal Trust staff, as well as 'Priority' and 'At Risk' status including NHS At Risk staff throughout Devon who are able to display recent relevant experience as dictated by the Person Specification***

Main duties of the job

Senior Network Infrastructure Engineer supporting the Plymouth Health Community network infrastructure.

Day-to-day duties include progressing planned project work and troubleshooting user-submitted Helpdesk tickets. The successful candidate will need strong communication skills and may occasionally represent the Trust in face-to-face and virtual meetings with suppliers and stakeholders on network infrastructure topics.

This role involves collaborating with the Advanced Network Infrastructure Engineer to assist in implementing planned work and configurations on the Trust's infrastructure.

PRIMARY DUTIES & AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITY

Technical Support

  • To be a lead specialist network engineer in support of the Plymouth Health Community network and telephony infrastructure including:

o LAN & WAN

o Enterprise WLAN

o Computer network security Firewalls, encryption, and authentication

o TCP/IP including DNS and DHCP

o VPN

o NAC

o BGP

o STP

o OSPF

o HPE Aruba (Procurve & CX)

o Aruba CPPM

o Aruba Mobility

o Fortinet

  • To manage the Trusts Comms Rooms including:
    • Access / Security
    • Environment issues heat and power usage
    • Panel patching standards
    • Network space allocation
    • Tidiness
    • Disposal of redundant equipment using Trust process
  • To analyse, investigate and resolve highly complex queries, problems, and users requirements of the network infrastructure, liaising with the Corporate Systems, Systems Operations and Client Services professionals where necessary.
  • To introduce, adapt, test, improve, repair and maintain the network infrastructure equipment ensuring that equipment operating system and software/firmware are at the correct revision level, completing Change Management Requests where necessary.
  • To configure networking equipment, ensuring appropriate access control and management of the secure systems.
  • To ensure the maximum availability of the network including Disaster Recovery planning and implementation, involving out of hours work where necessary.
  • To provide specialist advice, implement, enforce, monitor, report incidents and assist the investigation into breaches of the IT security policies, ensuring safe and appropriate use of computer network resources.
  • To develop and redesign the teams working practices, procedures and documentation, ensuring a quality first approach.
  • Monitor network performance and availability.
  • Assist in the management of the networks licensing position.

Person Specification

Knowledge and experience

Essential
  • In-depth knowledge and at least 5 years' experience of specialist networking technologies including IP addressing, Ethernet switching and network routing, both wired and wireless, across Local Area Network and Wide Area Network environments.
  • In-depth knowledge of enterprise wireless networking.
  • Knowledge and experience of cabling technologies including structured and fibre.ptic cabling specifications.
  • To be familiar with and adhere to the Health and Safety Policy and other Trust policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge and experience of specialist voice networking technologies including: o IP Telephony, o Analogue telephone systems o Convergence.
Desirable
  • To be able to plan and implement IT projects in conjunction with IT and non-IT staff.
  • Awareness: up to date with the NHS Programme for IT and other national directives.
  • Experience of working in a multidisciplinary team.
  • Proven knowledge of the following would be a distinct advantage: - Firewall technology - SNMP Network Monitoring software -Basic scripting or automation

  • Educated to an IT or Technical Master's degree level or Cisco Certified Networking Associate (CCNA) or equivalent relevant experience.
Desirable
  • Industry recognised HP Accredited Integration Specialist (HP AIS) certifications obtained through short courses, extensive self-study and examination.
  • Industry recognised FortiNet Accredited Integration Specialist certifications obtained through short courses, extensive self-study and examination.

  • Installations can involve physical effort, lifting and moving heavy and expensive IT equipment and working in non office environments (eg. Electrical risers, Plant Rooms, void spaces) which can be dusty, dirty, hot, noisy and confined. Occasionally working at heights using ladders.
