Apprentice Laboratory Technician

The role involves assembly of precision electron-optical devices, design and development of special purpose parts in our cleanroom and laboratory.

Role

York Probe Sources seek to recruit a Laboratory Technician to join a successful and dynamic team. The role involves the assembly of precision electron-optical devices; the design and development of special purpose parts; and the use of cleanroom and laboratory facilities. On a day to basis this will require general laboratory preparation and maintenance tasks to support busy production environment. On-the-job training to be provided.

Responsibilities:

  • Specialist cleaning of delicate parts using deionised water and ultrasonic baths
  • Use of light and electron microscopes as part of quality control process
  • Documenting and recording data relating to products
  • Working according to procedures and process under guidance from experienced staff
  • Cutting of metal and wire to specific lengths and standard
  • Report faults and seek diagnostic advice to maintain equipment in good working order, including calibration where required
  • Spot welding of wire using specialist jigs and tooling
  • Accurate measurement of parts to set tolerances
  • Adherence to internal company procedures e.g., stock control, work orders
  • Strong emphasis on clean assembly and preparation
  • Compliance with company policies e.g., Health & Safety
  • Use of clean room and adherence to best practice
  • Regular cleaning of laboratory environment to maintain low dust count
  • Use of basic IT e.g., Microsoft Access and Cloud-based solutions e.g. Google services

Training

  • You will work towards the Laboratory Technician Apprenticeship Level 3 which includes the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science.
  • The apprenticeship will be delivered through a series of progress reviews and observations in the workplace on a 6-8-week basis, checking necessary progress. Apprentices will have a day release to attend College to study the BTEC qualification.
  • For the BTEC Level 3 Diploma in Applied Science, there will be opportunities to learn about the fundamentals of science, working in the science industry, to develop various mathematical and scientific techniques, and conduct a scientific investigation. The Apprenticeship and BTEC delivery involve a blended learning method, using classroom discussion and our virtual learning environment to enhance learning.

For a Laboratory Technician, there are several potential career paths to consider:

  • Senior Laboratory Technician: With experience, you can progress to a senior role within the laboratory, overseeing activities, supervising junior technicians, and assisting with project management
  • Laboratory Manager/Supervisor: As you develop leadership skills, you can aspire to become a Laboratory Manager or Supervisor, responsible for managing staff, coordinating projects, and ensuring compliance with safety regulations
  • Research and Development (R&D) Technician: If you have a strong interest in research, you can explore opportunities in R&D departments, contributing to scientific investigations and collaborating with scientists and engineers
  • Quality Control/Quality Assurance Technician: Transitioning into a Quality Control/Quality Assurance role involves ensuring product quality, conducting tests, and maintaining compliance with industry standards
  • Technical Sales/Support: You can move into technical sales or support roles, providing guidance to customers, promoting laboratory equipment, or becoming a product specialist
  • Further Education and Specialization: Pursuing higher education, such as a degree, can lead to specialization in a scientific field, opening doors to research positions, teaching roles, or advanced positions in specialized laboratories
